Thepredecessoroftheschool
CentralSouthUniversityopenedonApril29,2000,Inthereorganizationofthenationalcollegesanduniversities,itwasformedbythemergerofCentralSouthUniversityofTechnology,HunanMedicalUniversityandChangshaRailwayUniversity.ItsorigincanbetracedbacktoHunanHigherIndustrialSchoolandXiangyaMedicalCollegewhichwerefoundedin1903and1914respectively.ThepredecessorofCentralSouthUniversityofTechnologywastheCentralSouthInstituteofMiningandMetallurgy(1952),anditsminingdepartmentiswell-knownathomeandabroad.ItisknownasChina’s"MiningandMetallurgicalHuangpu";ThepredecessorofHunanMedicalUniversitywasXiangyaMedicalCollege(1914),whichestablishedtheearliestwesternmedicalcollegeinChina,enjoyingthereputationof"SouthernXiangya,Beixiehe".
LiangHuankui,amodernindustrialistinHunan,believesthatmineralresourcesareusedtoconveybloodtothecountry,androadsaretheveinsofthecountry.Ifthesetwoimportanttasksarenotgrasped,thecountrywillbeintrouble.Whilenationalsovereigntyhasbeeninfringed,wealthhasbeenundercontrol,andtheshortageofdomestictalentshasbeenputtotheforefrontofthedisaster.InOctober1903,LiangHuankuiborrowed16,000taelsoffundfromtheHunanMiningBureautoestablishthe"HunanHigherIndustrialSchool"andservedastheschool’ssupervisor(i.e.theprincipal).Theschoolinitiallysetuptwosubjectsinminingandrailwayconstruction.AftermorethanacenturyThedevelopmentandevolutionofCentralSouthUniversityhasbecomeoneofthesourcesofengineeringatCentralSouthUniversity.

CentralSouthUniversityofTechnology’smainsubjectdatesbacktoitsestablishmentin1903TheminingdepartmentofHunanHigherIndustrialSchool.
In1952,duringthenationaladjustmentofcollegesanduniversities,theMiningandMetallurgicalDisciplinesofWuhanUniversity,SunYat-senUniversity,BeijingInstituteofTechnology,GuangxiUniversity,HunanUniversityandNanchangUniversitywereformedtoformZhongnanMine.TheSchoolofMetallurgyhassetup4departmentsofgeology,mining,mineralprocessing,andnon-ferrousmetalmetallurgy.
In1959,inthecontextofthedevelopmentofnuclearweaponsandnuclearindustry,thestatemovedtheformerMiningandMetallurgicalEngineeringDepartmentofCentralSouthUniversityofMiningandMetallurgytoHengyang,formingHengyangMiningandMetallurgicalEngineeringCollege(SouthChinaUniversity)undertheInthesecondmachinedepartment.
InOctober1960,itenteredtheranksofnationalkeyuniversitiesandwastheonlynationalkeyuniversityinHunanProvinceatthattime.ThejuniorcollegeclassoftheGeologyDepartmentofCentralSouthUniversityofMiningandMetallurgyparticipatedinthemergertoformtheHunanInstituteofGeology(HunanEngineeringVocationalandTechnicalCollege).
InNovember1981,withtheapprovaloftheStateCouncil,theschoolbecamethefirstbatchofdoctoralandmaster'sdegreegrantingunitsinthecountry.
In1985,itwasrenamedCentralSouthUniversityofTechnology,markingthetransitionfromasingleengineeringcollegetoacomprehensiveindustrialuniversity.
InNovember1989,theStateEducationCommissionheldthe"NationalUniversityScientificResearchManagementSeminar"inChangsha,Hunan.Atthemeeting,aRanked10thintherankingofkeyuniversities.

InDecember1996,itenteredthe"211Project"constructionranks,becomingthefirstbatchof27nationalkeyconstructionprojectsinthe21stcenturyOneoftheuniversities.TheschoolwassuccessivelyaffiliatedtotheMinistryofEducation,theMinistryofHigherEducation,theMinistryofMetallurgicalIndustryandtheChinaNonferrousMetalsIndustryCorporation.InSeptember1998,itbecameauniversitydirectlyundertheMinistryofEducationagain.
In1998,ChangshaTechnicalCollegewasmergedintoCentralSouthUniversityofTechnology.
In1999,theYueyangBranchofCentralSouthUniversityofTechnologywasmergedintoYueyangCityHealthSchool(YueyangVocationalandTechnicalCollege).

ThemainsubjectofChangshaRailwayInstitutedatesbackto1903.TheroaddepartmentofHunanHigherIndustrialSchool.
In1953,thecivilengineeringmajorsofWuhanUniversity,HunanUniversity,NanchangUniversity,andGuangxiUniversitymergedwiththecivilengineering,constructionandrailwaymajorsofSichuanUniversity,YunnanUniversity,andSouthChinaInstituteofTechnology.HunanUniversitywasabolishedandestablished.CentralSouthSchoolofCivilEngineeringandArchitecture(nowtheimmediatepredecessorofHunanUniversity).
In1959,thenameofHunanUniversitywasrestored.Thethreedepartmentsofrailwayconstruction,bridgesandtunnels,andrailwaytransportationofHunanUniversityandsomepubliccoursesteachingandresearchofficeswereseparated,andChangshaRailwayInstitutewasestablishedonanothercampus.
In1960,ChangshaRailwayInstitutewasofficiallylistedundertheMinistryofRailways.Itisanindustry-specificuniversitywithafocusonengineering,engineering,science,liberalarts,economics,management,andlaw.
In1962,theformerGuangzhouRailwayInstituteofGuangdongJiaotongUniversitywaspartlymergedintoChangshaRailwayInstitute.
In1970,ChangshaRailwayInstitutewasplacedundertheleadershipofHunanProvincebytheMinistryofRailways.
In1975,theMinistryofEducationandtheMinistryofRailwaysdecidedtochangetheChangshaRailwayInstitutetoamanagementsystemunderthedualleadershipoftheMinistryofRailwaysandHunanProvince,withtheMinistryofRailwaysasthemainstay.
In1981,thecollegebecameoneofthefirstuniversitiesinthecountrytobegrantedtherighttograntdoctorateandmasterdegrees.
HunanMedicalUniversity
In1906,theYaleUniversityYaleAssociationwasfoundedinChinain1906TheonlywesternhospitalinthecountrywasoriginallynamedYaliHospital.
In1914,onbehalfoftheHunanProvincialGovernmentandtheYale-ChinaAssociationofAmerica,theHunanEducationalSocietyestablishedtheXiangyaMedicalCollege(nowXiangyaMedicalCollege),andtheYaliHospitalwassubsequentlyrenamedXiangyaHospital."Xiang"standsforHunanand"Ya"standsforYali;itisoneoftheearliestwesternmedicalcollegesfoundedinChina.
In1921,theAmericaneducationdelegationconfirmedthatXiangyaMedicalCollegeandPekingUnionMedicalCollege,foundedin1906,werethebestschoolsinthecountry.
InFebruary1924,the"TenYearAgreement"ofXiangyajointlyestablishedbyHunanEducationalSocietyandYale-ChinaAssociationexpired.Afterrepeatedconsultationsbetweenthetwoparties,XiangyaMedicalCollegewasrenamedXiangyaMedicalUniversity.
In1925,SunYat-senoncewroteanexhortation"Studyforpracticaluse"forXiangya'sfifthgraduatingclassmates.DuringtheMayFourthMovement,MaoZedongonceeditedthe"NewHunan"weeklyhere.
InApril1931,theMinistryofEducationoftheRepublicofChinaapprovedtheXiangyaMedicalUniversityBoardofDirectorstofileacase;inDecemberofthesameyear,theschoolwasrenamedasaprivateXiangyaMedicalCollege.

InearlyAugust1938,theschoolrelocationcommitteedecidedtomovetheschooltoGuiyang,butthestudentsofgrade5andgrade6andnursingschool,AllthehospitalstayinHunan.Inthismonth,variousinstruments,specimens,booksandofficerequirementsweremovedtoGuiyangoneafteranother.InSeptember,thefacultyandfirst,second,third,andfourthgradestudentswenttoGuiyangoneafteranother.InDecember,theYuanlingbranchofXiangyaMedicalCollegewasaddedtoYuanling,andXiangyaNursingSchoolmovedheretocontinue.InApril1939,XiangyabuiltatemporaryschoolbuildinginShidongpo,outsidetheCinanGateofGuiyangCity,andmovedtoteachafterthecompletionoftheconstruction.TheplacehassincebeencalledXiangyaVillage.InJuly,theLeiyangbranchofXiangyaMedicalCollegewasestablishedinHunan.
OnAugust13,1940,theprivateXiangyaMedicalCollegewasrenamedtheNationalXiangyaMedicalCollege.AfterXiangyaMedicalCollegewasestablished,XiangyaHospitalandXiangyaNursingSchoolremainedprivate.
Inthewinterof1944,theJapaneseinvadedGuizhou,occupiedtheDushanMountainsandthreatenedGuiyang.XiangyaMedicalCollegewasmovedtoYanggongqiaoinChongqing,Sichuan.

InearlyMarch1945,XiangyaMedicalCollegeborrowedthreelargewarehousesinYanggongqiao,Chongqing,DepartmentofMilitaryIndustry,asatemporaryschool.Pointtomaketheschoolcontinue.TheclinicalteachingofseniorgradescanbecarriedoutasusualatChongqingCentralHospitalinGaotanyan.InearlyOctober,themedicalstaff,familymembersandinternsofXiangyaHospitalwhohadtakenrefugeinDongping,AnhuareturnedtoChangsha.InSeptember1949,theCulturalTakeoverDepartmentoftheChangshaMilitaryControlCommissionoftheChinesePeople'sLiberationArmytookovertheNationalXiangyaMedicalCollege.
OnJune11,1953,theMinistryofHealthoftheCentralPeople'sGovernmentapprovedthatXiangyaMedicalCollegewasofficiallyrenamedHunanMedicalCollegeonOctober1ofthatyear.Correspondingly,theaffiliatedhospitalandtheaffiliatednursingschoolhavebeenrenamedtheaffiliatedhospitalofHunanMedicalCollegeandtheaffiliatednursingschoolofHunanMedicalCollege.
From1949to1957,theaffiliationofXiangyaMedicalCollegewaschangedseveraltimes.ItwasfirstmanagedbytheEducationDepartmentofHunanProvince,andthenunderthemanagementoftheMinistryofHealthoftheStateMinistryofHealthandtheMinistryofHealthoftheCentralSouthMilitaryandPoliticalCommittee.InOctober1954,theMinistryofHealthwasagainundertheleadershipoftheMinistryofHealth,andsinceJanuary1958,itwasagainunderthesupervisionofHunanProvince.
OnMay28,1978,theMinistryofHealthheldahandovermeetingregardingthetransferofHunanMedicalCollegefromtheprovincetotheministry,anddecidedthattheleadershiprelationshipofHunanMedicalCollegeshouldbereplacedbythedualleadershipoftheMinistryofHealthandHunanProvince.LeadersoftheMinistryofHealtharethemainstay.
Since1979,thecollegehasgotintouchwithorganizationssuchasthe"ChinaMedicalFoundation"intheUnitedStates,andhasresumeditscooperativerelationshipwiththeYale-ChinaAssociationwiththeapprovaloftheStateCouncil.
In1981,thecollegebecamethefirstbatchofdoctoralandmaster'sdegreegrantingunitsinthecountry.
InDecember1987,withtheapprovaloftheStateEducationCommission,thecollegewasrenamedHunanMedicalUniversity.
InJuly1996,theMinistryofHealthandHunanProvincesignedanagreementtojointlybuildHunanMedicalUniversity.InSeptember,itpassedthepre-examinationofthe"211Project"departmentandcarriedoutconstructionintheformofjointconstructionbytheMinistryofHealth.
In1999,theschoolwasselectedasthefirstbatchofnationalcollegestudentculturalqualityeducationbases.
Mergerandestablishment
OnApril29,2000,theCentralSouthUniversityofTechnology,HunanMedicalUniversityandChangshaRailwayUniversitymergedtoformCentralSouthUniversityinthereorganizationofthenationalhighereducationinstitutions..InJune,theGraduateSchoolofCentralSouthUniversitywasapprovedbytheMinistryofEducationfortrialoperation.
InFebruary2001,theschoolenteredtheranksofthenational"985Project",thekeytojointlybuildhigh-leveluniversitiesbytheMinistryandProvinces.
InDecember2003,theschoolbecameauniversitydirectlyadministeredbythecentralgovernmentanddirectlyundertheMinistryofEducation.
InSeptember2005,theschoolwasselectedintothenational"111Plan",becomingoneofthefirstbatchof23selecteduniversities.
InJanuary2008,theMinistryofEducation,theNationalDefenseScience,TechnologyandIndustryCommission,andtheHunanProvincialPeople'sGovernmentannouncedtheestablishmentofCentralSouthUniversity.
InApril2010,theschoolwasratedbytheMinistryofEducationasatypicaluniversitywithgraduateemploymentexperienceacrossthecountry.June.Includedinthefirstbatchof"OutstandingEngineerEducationandTrainingProgram"oftheMinistryofEducation.
InJanuary2011,theschoolwasawardedthe"NationalEngineeringMasterEducationInnovationCollege".Inthesameyear,itwasselectedasoneofthefirstbatchofengineeringdoctortrainingunitsandoutstandinglegaltalentseducationandtrainingprogramuniversitiesinthecountry.

InJuly2016,theschoolwasratedbytheMinistryofEducationasatypicaluniversitywithexperienceininnovationandentrepreneurshipinthecountry.Inthesameyear,itwasselectedasoneofthefirstbatchof16Chineseoutstandingculturalandartisticinheritancebasesestablishedbythestatetosupportuniversities.
InJanuary2017,theschoolwasrecognizedas"thefirstbatchofdemonstrationuniversitiesinthecountrytodeepenthereformofinnovationandentrepreneurshipeducation."InJune,itwasselectedastheNationalDemonstrationBaseforMassEntrepreneurshipandInnovation.InSeptember,itwasselectedintothelistofnational"doublefirst-class"constructionuniversitiesandbecameoneof36world-classuniversities(categoryA).InDecember,itwasappraisedasa"DeepeningInnovationandEntrepreneurshipEducationReformwithCharacteristicExperienceColleges".
InMarch2018,theschoolwasselectedasoneofthefirstbatchofnationalnewengineeringresearchandpracticeprojectsbytheMinistryofEducation.InNovember,itwasselectedasthefirstbatchofChineseexcellenttraditionalcultureinheritancebases.
InMay2019,withtheapprovaloftheAcademicDegreesCommitteeoftheStateCouncil,theschoolwasaddedasanindependentreviewunitfordegreeauthorization.
InJuly2020,itwasselectedintothesecondbatchofuniversities'nationalintellectualpropertyinformationservicecenterconstructionlist.InSeptember,joinedtheHealthAllianceforPovertyAlleviation.InOctober,itwasselectedasthefirstbatchofnationalintellectualpropertymodeluniversities.InOctober,itwasdesignatedasthe2020NationalIntellectualPropertyDemonstrationUniversitybytheStateIntellectualPropertyOfficeandtheMinistryofEducation.InNovember,itwasidentifiedasthesecondbatchofpilotunitsfortheconstructionofeducationalfinancialmedia.

馆藏资源
截至2017年底,中南大学图书馆馆藏纸质文献总量454万余册(包括图书、过刊和资料等),电子文献总量1036万余册(包括电子图书、电子期刊折合数、学位论文等)。馆藏文献重点涵盖冶金、材料、地质、采矿、土木建筑、交通运输、医学等多个学科,建立了连续性的、反映学校专业特色的藏书体系。
图书馆引进CNKI、SCI、SSCI、EI、SciFinder等中外文全文和文摘数据库共250余个,馆藏各类电子资源涵盖学校全部重点学科。自建多个特色数据库,其中《有色金属特色文献数据库》和《重点学科导航库》被列入“中国高等教育文献保障体系(CALIS)”子项目。依托中国高等教育文献保障体系(CALIS)、湖南省高校数字化图书馆、馆际互借资源共享平台等,可实现广泛的文献信息资源共享。
中南大学图书馆为教育部首批综合类科技查新单位、中国数字图书馆分馆,2003年,中南大学图书馆成为教育部首批全国11个综合类科技查新站之一(Z11)。

校徽
学校校徽主要包括学校徽志和徽章。
学校徽志为双圆套圆形徽标,色彩为蓝、白。创意源自传统的中国结造型。图形以“中南大学”英文缩写字母“CSU”为结构中心,形成中国结造型。正下方有“中南大学”中文字样,正上方为环形英文CENTRALSOUTHUNIVERSITY大写字样,左右下侧方各由10条线连接内外圆。
徽志蓝色色标为CMYK:90.50.10.0,象征:科技人文的结合,海纳百川的包容。
学校徽章为教职工和学生佩戴的题有校名“中南大学”字样的长方形证章。教师徽章为深红底金字,研究生徽章为蓝底金字,本科生徽章为绿底金字;所有长方形证章都以金色包边。

知行合一、经世致用
校训解读:“知行合一、经世致用”,远承先秦诸子“备物致用”的为学之道和宋明理学“为万世开太平”的宏大志向,近效湖湘学派务实践行的优良传统。
“知”是认识,即对于万物事理的思惟省察,对于人生哲理的领会理解。“行”是实践,即把所明白的道理运用和落实到人伦日用。“知行合一”,就是强调认识与实践的统一,包括:一、既注重知,又注重行;二、既知得透彻,又行得切实;三、既以知为行的主宰,又以行为知的归宿;四、既重知向行的转化,又重行对知的更新和发展。
“经世”,即改造世界,改善社会民生,治理世间事务;它大到致力于国家的繁荣、民族的振兴、社会的进步、人民的富强,小到推动区域环境和文明风习的变革。“致用”,即学以致用,努力践行,在实践中发挥大学和人才对社会的引领作用。“经世致用”的根本旨趣,就是强调大学要以天下为己任,求索治世之道,培养济世英才,积极入世,引领文明,报效国家,服务人民。
“经世致用”是大学的办学目标和价值取向,“知行合一”是大学实现价值的途径和方式。
以“知行合一、经世致用”作为校训,一是切合中南大学长期以来积累的办学特色;二是与学校所秉承的湖湘文化精神底蕴相契合;三是与孙中山先生当年的题词“学成致用”一脉相承。
