Според всяка система характеристиките на елементите, методите на свързване, общността на функциите, размерът на мащаба и обхватът на енергийните промени са разделени на единадесет нива: глобално (биосфера), регион (биом), ландшафт, екосистема, общност, население, индивид, организация, клетка, гени, молекули.
