BellSouthisrealigningitselfintwoimportantareas,wirelessandbroadband.A40percentjointventurewithAT&T(formerlySBC)inU.S.wirelesstelephoneserviceCingularprovidesalargepercentageofBellSouth'srevenue.Continuedincreaseofbroadbandpenetrationandapplicationsintheconsumermarketisakeystrategytothecompany.TheseactivitiesarebeingfundedinpartbythesaleofLatinAmericaoperations.
BellSouthiscurrentlytheonly"BabyBell"thatdoesnotoperatepaytelephones.By2003,BellSouth'spayphoneoperationwasdiscontinuedbecauseithadbecometoounprofitable,mostlikelyduetotheincreasedavailabilityofcellphones.CincinnatiBellhastakenBellSouth'splaceforpayphonesinnorthernBellSouthterritory;independentshavesetinfurthersouth.
