Inthe23rdyearofGuangxu(1897),ChenQizhang,thesupervisorofJiangxiProvince,asked"Imitatelargeandsmallcopperdollarstomakeupforthelackofmoney."Inthetwenty-sixthyearofGuangxu(1900),copperyuanwassuccessfullytrial-castinGuangdongforthefirsttime.Eachcopperdollarweighs2coins,containing95%copper,4%whitelead,and1%tin.ThefourChinesecharacters"GuangxuYuanbao"andthetwomanchucharacters"Baoguang"arecastonthefront,withthewords"Onecircleforeveryhundredpieces"aroundit.Thecenterofthebackisengravedwithaflatdragondecoration,andthewords"GuangdongYixian"inEnglisharearoundit.Thisistheoriginalcopperdollar.In1904,theappearanceofthecopperyuanchangedslightly:theoriginalwords"oneroundforeveryhundredpieces"waschangedto"tenwordsforeachpieceofmoney";theEnglishword"onecents"onthebackwasalsochangedto"tenwords".Thenewcopperyuanisexquisiteandgorgeous.Asaresult,variousprovinceshavefollowedsuit.However,theGuangxuYuanbaocoppercoinsmintedinvariousprovinceshavethenameoftheprovinceonthescreen,andthewordsandpatternshavealsochanged.Atthistime,"thecopperyuanhasbeenopenedforcastingintenprovinces,withasmanyas20bureaus".AccordingtoLiangQichao'srecords,thenumberofbronzecastingsineachyearwas1,741,167inthe30thyearofGuangxu,46,969,920inthe31styearofGuangxu,1,709,384inthe32ndyearofGuangxu,2,851,200inthe33rdyearofGuangxu,and1,428,000inthe34thyearofGuangxu.
In1905,theQinggovernmentsetouttoforgethe"GreatQingCopperCoin"inordertoneatlysetacopperdollarandsolvetheabuse.Therearefourtypes:twenty-fourcoins,ten-twocoins,five-foldonecoin,andtwo-foldfourcents.Thefinenessissetasredcopperninety-five,withwhiteleadfive.Becauseoftheunacceptabletrendofovercasting,thevalueofthecopperdollarisdepreciatingdaybyday.

ThecoppercoinsintheearlyRepublicofChinarefertothecoppercoinsissuedfromthefirstyearoftheRepublicofChina(1912)totheseventhyearoftheRepublicofChina(1918).Itstypesinclude"foundingcommemorativecoins","republiccommemorativecoins"andtheRepublicofChinacopperyuanwiththenameoftheprovince.Duringthisperiod,themixedcirculationofthenew-stylecopperyuanandtheold-stylecopperyuaninthelateQingDynastyfurtherworsenedthechaosofthecopperyuan.
