1952InJuly,theCentralMinistryofEducationdecidedtoestablishtheEastChinaInstituteofChemicalTechnologyinaccordancewiththenationaladjustmentplanforthedepartmentsofhigherindustrialschools.OnAugust11th,asymposiumontheestablishmentoftheschoolwasheldintheconferenceroomoftheHigherEducationDepartmentoftheEastChinaMilitaryandPoliticalCommittee.Themeetingdecidedthattheschoolwasnamed"EastChinaInstituteofChemicalTechnology",whichwascomposedofJiaotongUniversity,AuroraUniversity,DatongUniversity,SoochowUniversity,JiangnanUniversityThechemicalengineeringdepartmentsof5universitiesweremerged,andtheschoolsitewaslocatedattheformerSchoolofScienceofTongjiUniversity,No.195,ZhengfaRoad,Jiangwan,Shanghai.Duringthesummervacation,inadditiontotheteachersandstudentsoftheChemicalEngineeringDepartmentofthefiveuniversities,teachersfrom8universitiesincludingFudanUniversity,TongjiUniversity,St.John'sUniversity,HujiangUniversity,EastChinaNormalUniversity,andEastChinaMilitaryandPoliticalCommitteewerealsotransferredtotheschool,aswellasstafffromDatongUniversity.Therestructuringsystemwastransferredtotheschool.OnOctober25,the"EstablishmentofEastChinaInstituteofChemicalTechnologyandthefirstsemesteropeningceremony"washeldatJiangwancampus.OnOctober30,the"EastChinaInstituteofChemicalTechnology"wasofficiallyopened.TheschoolisaffiliatedtotheEducationManagementBureauoftheEastChinaMilitaryandPoliticalCommittee,andisledbyitonbehalfoftheCentralMinistryofHigherEducation.Historicalphotos(74photos)
OnJanuary20,1953,thePartyWorkingCommitteeoftheShanghaiMunicipalCommitteeoftheCommunistPartyofChinaapprovedtheestablishmentoftheEastChinaInstituteofChemicalTechnologyPartyCommittee.InMarch,theschoolbegantobuildMeilongcampus.OnJuly24,theschoolfirstbegantoselectpostgraduatesandcollegestudentsfromyoungteachersandcollegestudents.InAugust,alltheteachersandstudentsoftheindustrialanalysismajoroftheschoolweremergedintotheDepartmentofChemicalEngineeringofZhejiangUniversity.InSeptember,theDepartmentofChemicalEngineeringofShandongInstituteofTechnologywasadjustedandmergedintotheschool.InAugust1954,thenewMeilongcampusoftheschoolwascompletedandputintouse;onthe28thofthesamemonth,theschooltransferredallthebuildingsnorthofHandanRoadtoFudanUniversity,andalltheplotsandpropertiesonZhengfaRoadandGuoquanRoadweretransferred.TotheRealEstateAdministrationofShanghaiMunicipalPeople'sGovernment.Inthesameyear,theschoolbegantorecruitworkersandpeasantsfortransfer.Inthesameyear,themajorofInorganicEngineeringofSouthChinaInstituteofTechnologywasadjustedandmergedintoEastChinaInstituteofChemicalTechnology.Inthefallofthesameyear,allmajorsoftheschoolfollowedtheSovietmodelofrunningschoolsandbegantochangethe4-yearschoolsystemto5years.
InJuly1956,theschoolestablishedanightuniversity.InNovember,theschoolwasallowedtorecruit(associatedoctorate)graduatestudentsforthefirsttime;inthesamemonth,theschoolrecruitedforeignstudentsforthefirsttime.InDecember,theschoolwasundertheleadershipoftheShanghaiMunicipalPeople'sGovernment.
InSeptember1958,theschoolbegantorecruitworkersandpeasantsforpreparatorycourses(recruitmentwassuspendedsince1961).Inthesameyear,theschoolcooperatedwiththeChineseAcademyofSciencestoestablishthe"InstituteofHeavyOrganicSynthesisoftheChineseAcademyofSciences"(in1962,itwasrenamedasthePlasticsLaboratoryoftheEastChinaInstituteofChemicalTechnology)andthe"InstituteofSeawaterChemistryoftheChineseAcademyofSciences"(closedattheendof1962).
InOctober1960,theschoolwaslistedasoneofthe64nationalkeycollegesanduniversitiesbytheCentralCommitteeoftheCommunistPartyofChina,underthedirectleadershipoftheMinistryofEducation.
InJanuary1965,thePartyCentralCommitteeandtheStateCouncildecidedtobuildfourmajoruniversitycampuses,includingtheEastChinaInstituteofChemicalTechnology.Someoftheschool’sconfidentialitymajorsmovedwesttoZigongCity,SichuanProvincetobuildtheSouthwestBranch,code-named"Project652."".
In1966,afterthe"CulturalRevolution"brokeout,allcollegesanduniversitiesacrossthecountrystoppedenrollingstudents.Allteachersandstudentsinschoolsparticipatedinthe"CulturalRevolution"movement.Workwasforcedtostop.
OnJanuary12,1967,theRedFlagCorps,aschoolrebelorganization,"successfullyseizedpower",andtheschoolwascompletelyparalyzed.
OnMarch8,1968,theschoolestablishedthe"RevolutionaryCommitteeofEastChinaInstituteofChemicalTechnology"withstudentsasthemainstay.Itsmaintaskistocontinuetoengageinsports.OnAugust26,morethan1,000workpropagandateamsandmilitarypropagandateamsenteredtheschoolandcontinuedtocarryoutaseriesofcampaignssuchas"cleaninguptheclassteam","fighting,criticizing,andreforming".
OnDecember26,1969,withtheapprovaloftheStateCouncil,theschoolwasplacedundertheleadershipofShanghai;onthesameday,theschoolheldapetrochemicalprofessionaleducationrevolutionstudyclass(alsoknownasapilotclass),witha2-yearschoolingperiod.
OnMay27,1970,theschoolheldapilotclassforchemicalfertilizers.OnMay28,theschoolopenedthe"May7th"CadreSchool(stoppedsince1974).Inthesameyear,theschoolbecameoneofChina'sfirstnuclearpowerplantconstructionproject(code-named"728Project")responsibleforthebattlemission.
InApril1972,theschoolbegantorecruitworkers,peasantsandsoldiersfromalloverthecountry.InAugust,theShanghaiMunicipalPartyCommitteedecidedthattheschoolwasrenamedShanghaiInstituteofChemicalTechnology.OnDecember4,theschoolresumeditspartycommitteesystem.Inthesameyear,theSouthwestBranchofEastChinaInstituteofChemicalTechnologywasrenamedtheSichuanBranchofShanghaiInstituteofChemicalTechnology.
InJanuary1973,someteachersfromtheDepartmentofBiophysicalChemistryofShanghaiUniversityofScienceandTechnologyandShanghaiUniversityofFinanceandEconomicsweretransferredtotheschool.Inthesameyear,theSichuanbranchoftheschoolbegantorecruitworkers,peasantsandsoldiers.
InSeptember1974,therecruitmentofforeignstudentswasresumed.
InOctober1976,theschoolresumedenrollmentandteaching,andalltaskswerebackontrack.
InDecember1977,theschoolrestartedenrollingundergraduates,andtheundergraduateprogramwasrestoredtofouryears.
In1978,theschoolwasagainplacedunderthedirectleadershipoftheMinistryofEducationasanationalkeyuniversity.Inthesameyear,theschoolresumedenrollmentofgraduatestudents.InNovemberofthesameyear,theschool,ShanghaiChemicalIndustryBureauandLuwanDistrictGovernmentjointlyestablishedthebranchofShanghaiInstituteofChemicalTechnology.
InJuly1979,withtheapprovaloftheStateCouncil,theSichuanBranchofShanghaiInstituteofChemicalTechnologywasclosed,andtheoriginalsitewaschangedtoSichuanInstituteofChemicalTechnology(nowSichuanUniversityofChemicalTechnology).
InAugust1980,theMinistryofEducationapprovedtheschooltorestoretheoriginalnameofEastChinaInstituteofChemicalTechnology.
OnNovember26,1981,withtheapprovaloftheStateCouncil,theschoolbecamethefirstbatchofdoctoralandmaster'sdegreegrantingunitsinthecountry,anditwasawardedfivedoctoraldegreesinchemicalengineering.
InMay1982,theschoolsignedacomprehensivetechnicalcooperationagreementwiththeChangzhouScienceandTechnologyCommission,theEconomicCommission,andthePlanningCommissiontoestablishthefirstscientificresearchandproductionconsortiumofShanghaiuniversities.InSeptemberofthesameyear,YeUniversityresumedenrollment.
InJune1984,theschoolrecruitedpoliticalsciencecadresfromenterprisesandinstitutionsaffiliatedtotheMinistryofChemicalIndustry,theMinistryofPetroleumIndustry,ChinaNationalPetroleumCorporation,Yantai,Zaozhuang,andShanghai.Inthesameyear,thebranchofEastChinaInstituteofChemicalTechnologywasmergedintotheMechanicalandElectricalBranchofShanghaiJiaotongUniversity(nowShanghaiUniversityofEngineeringScience).
InNovember1985,withtheapprovaloftheStateCouncil,theschoolestablishedapost-doctoralresearchstationforchemicalengineeringandindustrialchemistryforthefirsttime.
InOctober1988,theschoolbecameoneofthethreecomprehensivereformpilotuniversitiesoftheStateEducationCommission.
InFebruary1989,theschoolandsomekeyengineeringuniversitiesinitiatedtheestablishmentofthe"NationalScienceandTechnologyWorkSeminarfor16KeyEngineeringUniversities".
In1991,theschoolwasapprovedasthecountry'sfirstdoctoralprograminbiochemicalengineering.
In1992,EastChinaInstituteofChemicalTechnologywasratedas"NationalExcellentSchoolforPhysicalEducationCurriculumEvaluationinOrdinaryCollegesandUniversities".
InFebruary1993,withtheapprovaloftheNationalEducationCommission,theschoolwasrenamedEastChinaUniversityofScienceandTechnology.InMarch,theschoolwasnamed"ShanghaiGardenUnit"forthefirsttime.
OnDecember4,1995,theNationalEducationCommissionsignedacontractwithChinaPetrochemicalCorporationtojointlyestablishandmanageEastChinaUniversityofScienceandTechnology.
InJune1996,theschoolenteredthenational"211Project"keyconstructionranks.Inthesameyear,ShanghaiPetrochemicalCollegewasmergedintoEastChinaUniversityofScienceandTechnology,andtheSchoolofPetrochemicalEngineeringofEastChinaUniversityofScienceandTechnologywasestablished.

SinceOctober25,1997,theschoolhasbeenjointlyconstructedbytheStateEducationCommission,ChinaPetrochemicalCorporationandShanghaiMunicipalGovernment..InJune2000,theschoolwasapprovedbytheMinistryofEducationtoestablishagraduateschool(thegraduateschoolwasformallyestablishedinJune2004).OnNovember30,theSchoolofPetrochemicalEngineeringofEastChinaUniversityofScienceandTechnologywassubstantivelymergedintoEastChinaUniversityofScienceandTechnology;inthesamemonth,theschoolandtheUniversityofCanberrainAustraliajointlyorganizedthefirstIMBAclass.
In2001,theschoolfirstsetupanationaltechnologytransfercenter.
InMarch2002,theMinistryofEducationapprovedtheschoolasapilotunitformoderndistanceeducation,andtheSchoolofOnlineEducationofEastChinaUniversityofScienceandTechnologywasestablished.
InMarch2003,theschoolwasapprovedasthefirstbatchofuniversitiesinthecountrytoimplementindependentenrollmentreforms.
InApril2004,theschoolbegantoconstructthenewFengxiancampus,coveringanareaof1,544mu.InSeptember,theschoolrecruitednationaldefensestudentsforthefirsttime.
InDecember2005,theEastChinaUniversityofScienceandTechnologyScienceParkwasestablished.
InNovember2006,theschoolwasselectedintothe"HighSchoolDisciplinaryInnovationandIntelligenceIntroducingProgram"(Plan111);inthesamemonth,theSchoolofInternationalEducationofEastChinaUniversityofScienceandTechnologywasestablished.
InJuly2007,theFengxiancampuswasofficiallyputintouse;onAugust15ofthesameyear,theJinshancampuswastransformedintotheEastChinaUniversityofScienceandTechnologyNationalUniversityScienceParkJinshanScienceandTechnologyPark.
InApril2008,theschoolwasrated"excellent"intheevaluationoftheundergraduateteachinglevelofordinarycollegesanduniversitiesbytheMinistryofEducation;inJulyofthesameyear,theschoolwasselectedintotheNationalUniversityStudentInnovativeExperimentalProgram;inOctober,theschoolwasapprovedforconstruction"985ProjectAdvantageDisciplineInnovationPlatform".
InApril2010,theschoolwasratedasthe"2009NationalGraduateEmploymentModelExperienceCollege";inJuneofthesameyear,theschoolwasselectedasoneofthefirstbatchof"OutstandingEngineerEducationandTrainingProgram"implementedbytheMinistryofEducation.
InApril2011,EastChinaUniversityofScienceandTechnologyandotheruniversitiesinitiatedtheestablishmentofahigh-levelindustry-specificuniversityhigh-qualityresourcesharingalliance.
InSeptember2012,theschoolwasselectedasthefirstbatchofnationalcollegestudents'innovationandentrepreneurshiptrainingprogram;inNovemberofthesameyear,theschoolandtheUniversityofNottinghamintheUnitedKingdomestablishedtheEastChinaUniversityofScienceandTechnologyShanghaiNottinghamInstituteofScience;thesamemonth,EastChinaUniversityofScienceandTechnologyTheInstituteofTechnologyDevelopmentwasestablished.
InMay2013,theschoolwasidentifiedasthefirstbatchofsocialworkprofessionaltrainingbasesfortheMinistryofCivilAffairs;inthesamemonth,theschoolsignedacontractwiththeFengxianDistrictPeople’sGovernmenttojointlybuildthe"ShanghaiInstituteofBiomanufacturingIndustryTechnology."

AsofJanuary2020,theschoolhaswontheNationalNaturalScienceAward,NationalInventionAwardandNationalThereare70scienceandtechnologyprogressawards,morethan700scienceandtechnologyawardsfromprovincialministriesandcommissions,andmorethan2,000validpatentsathomeandabroad.In2016,hewonthefirstShanghaiSpecialPrizeforTechnologicalInventioninthehistoryofShanghaiScienceandTechnologyAwards.In1978,hewon10majorscientificandtechnologicalachievementawardsattheNationalScienceConference.
AsofJune2016,inthepastfiveyears,theschool’stotalscientificresearchfundinghasreached3.195billionyuan,andithaswon136importantscientificandtechnologicalachievementsawardsattheprovincialandministeriallevelandabove,including13atthenationallevel.Asof2015,theschoolhasreceivedatotalof144naturalsciencefunds,anincreaseof1.8timescomparedwith2009.In2015,theschoolhad403patentapplicationsand349authorizedpatents.
