Thebuddingera

ThehistoryofNokiabeganin1865.In1865,miningengineerFredichIdestamestablishedawoodpulpfactorybyariverinTampere,Finland.ThefactorywaslocatedatthejunctionofFinlandandtheRussianEmpireandusedlocaltreesasrawmaterials.Productionofwoodpulpandcardboard.

In1868,EdelsteinestablishedhissecondfactoryontheNokianvirtaRiver,15kilometerswestofTamperetown:arubberprocessingfactory,whichinadditiontoproducingleatherbootsInadditiontotires,italsoproducesindustrialrubberproducts.In1871,withthehelpofhisfriendLeoMechelin(LeoMechelin),Edelsteinmergedthetwofactoriesintoonefactoryandtransformeditintoajointstockcompany.EdelsteinbecamethefirstNokiamanager,Andthetwolaternamedthecompany"Nokia".Thecompanyhassinceretainedthename"Nokia".

Attheendofthe19thcentury,EdelsteintransferredthepositionofNokiamanagertoLeoMichelin,whenthebuddingoftheradioindustrywasjustbeginning.Asaresult,MichelinsuddenlywantedtoexpandNokia'sbusinessintothetelecommunicationsindustry,butitwasopposedbyEdelstein.Itwasnotuntil1902thatMichelinconvincedEdelstein,whichallowedNokiatoaddatelecommunicationsdepartment.ButwhatMichelindidn'texpectwasthatthetelecommunicationsdepartmentheestablishedonawhimeventuallydevelopedintothelaterNokiacompany.

Industrialera

In1967,Nokiabecamealargecross-industrycompanyinFinland.Itsindustriesinvolvedpapermaking,chemicals,rubber,cables,pharmaceuticals,naturalgas,petroleum,military,etc.Manyareas,andNokia'smobilephonemanufacturingbeganin1960.

In1960,BjornWesterlund,thethenpresidentofNokia,focusedonthetelecommunicationsindustry.Hebelievedthatthefuturetelecommunicationsindustrywasthetrendoftechnologicaldevelopment,soheestablishedtheNokiaElectronicsDepartmentandfocusedontelecommunicationssystems.TheMinistryofElectronicswasalreadystudyingtheissueofradiotransmission,whichlaidthefoundationforNokiaGroupTelecom.

By1967,thepreviouselectronicsdepartmenthaddevelopedintoamajordepartmentwith460peopleandnetsalesaccountingfor3%oftheentiregroup'snetsales.InrecognitionofNokiaasthelargestlocalindustrialfacilityandemployer,thetownofPohjois-Pirkkala,establishedin1937,wasrenamedNokiaTownayearlater.In1977,NokiaTownwasupgradedtoNokiaCity.OntheemblemofNokiaCityisasablecrawlinginabluestream.

ThenameofthetownofNokiacomesfromariverthatflowsthroughthelocalarea.TheriveriscalledNokianvirta,whichmeanssableinancientFinnish.Nokia’sfontisAgfaMonotypeNokiaSans,originallydesignedbyEricSpiekermann.Previously,inadvertisingandmobilephoneusermanuals,Nokia’smostcommonlyusedfontwasAgfaRotisSans.

Theeraoftelecommunications

From1962tothemid-1970s,Nokia'sshareoftheFinnishtelecommunicationsmarketcontinuedtoincrease.

In1982,Nokia(thencalledMobira)producedthefirstNordicmobilephonenetworkSenator.Subsequently,Talkmanwasdeveloped.Inthemid-1980s,NokiamobilephonesenteredtheU.S.marketthroughtheTandyRadioCabinstore.InordertoproduceAMPS(AdvancedMobilePhoneSystem)simulatorssoldbyTandy,thecompanyandTandyestablishedajointproductionplantinKoreain1985.

In1990,thenumberofmobilephoneusersincreasedgreatly,thepriceofmobilephonesdroppedrapidly,andmobilephonesbecamesmallerandsmaller.Nokiaalsoclearlyformulatedastrategytodevelopintoavibranttelecommunicationscompany.Whilefocusingontelecommunications,Nokia'sbusinessscopehasexpandeddramaticallywiththerapiddevelopmentofthetelecommunicationssector.Atthesametime,Nokiaisalsocommittedtoglobalcommunicationtechnology.ThefirstglobalcommunicationdialoguewasconductedusingNokiaphones,whichwasconductedthroughFinland'sNokiaRadiolinjanetworkin1991.

Inthemid-1990s,Nokiawasonthevergeofbankruptcyduetotoomanyindustries.Atthattime,Nokia’spresidentandseniorexecutivesdecisivelyabandonedallotherindustriesandsplitupthetraditionalindustries,leavingonlyNokiaElectronics.Department,sellingallothertraditionalindustries,NokiaGroupbeganatwo-yearsplit,andatthismomentNokiahasmadethemostimportantstrategicdecisioninitshistory.

MobilePhoneEra

In1995,Nokia'soverallmobilephonesalesandorderssoared,andthecompany'sprofitssoared.

In2003,Nokia1100hassold200millionunitsworldwide.

In2009,Nokiashippedapproximately431.8millionmobilephones.

Inthesecondquarterof2010,Nokia'sshareofthemobileterminalmarketwasapproximately35.0%,leadingthemarketshareofothermobilephonesatthetimeby20.6%.

AcquisitionbyMicrosoft

OnFebruary11,2011,NokiaannouncedastrategicpartnershipwithMicrosoftinLondon,UK,toabandonSymbianandMeeGo.UseMicrosoftWindowsPhonesystem,andwillparticipateintheresearchanddevelopmentofthesystem.

OnJune21,2012,MicrosoftreleasedtheWindowsPhone8(WP8)operatingsystematapressconferenceinSanFrancisco,USA.Itusesabrand-newNTkernelandinterface,whichsupportsmulti-coreprocessorsandHDTheresolutionandoverallperformancearemorepowerful,andNokiabeganmassproductionofWP8mobilephones.However,thenewWP8systemisnotcompatiblewiththeoriginalWP7.5system.At10o'clockintheeveningonSeptember5,NokiaandMicrosoftheldapressconferenceinNewYork,USA,andofficiallylaunchedtwosmartphonesusingMicrosoftWindowsPhone8operatingsystem.

OnthemorningofSeptember3,2013,itwasannouncedthatMicrosoftannouncedthatitwouldacquireNokia’smobilephonebusinessforapproximatelyUS$7.17billion,aswellasalargenumberofpatentportfolios.MicrosoftwillacquireNokia'sequipmentandservicesdivisionfor3.79billioneuros,andatthesametimepurchaselicensesforitspatentportfoliofor1.65billioneuros,totaling5.44billioneuros,orapproximately7.17billionUSdollars.NokiawillprovideMicrosoftwitha10-yearnon-exclusivepatentlicense.MicrosoftwillalsoprovideNokiawithpatentlicensesrelatedtolocationtechnology.Microsofthastherighttoextendthispatentcooperationinthefuture.

At8pmonNovember19,2013,Nokiawillholdageneralmeetingofshareholders.Despitethedissatisfactionofasmallgroupofshareholders,themediasaidthatifthereisnoaccident,thegeneralmeetingwillapproveNokiatotransferitsmobilephonebusinesstoMicrosoft.

OnApril25,2014,MicrosoftannouncedthatithadcompletedtheacquisitionofNokia'sequipmentandservicesdivision.TheacquisitionhasbeenapprovedbyNokiashareholdersandregulatoryagenciesinvariouscountriesandregions.

OnMay6,2014,NokiaannouncedthatitwouldinvestUS$100million(approximatelyRMB616million)tosetupanewfundtoinvestincompaniesdevelopingsmartcartechnologytosupportNokia’sdigitalmapBusinessdevelopment.ThenewfundwillbemanagedbyNokiaGrowthPartners,Nokia'sventurecapitalbusinessunit.

OnJuly18,2014,Microsoftannouncedthatitwilllayoff18,000employeesinthenextyear,ofwhichapproximately12,500willbefromtheNokiadepartment.

OnApril15,2015,NokiaacquiredAlcatel-Lucentfor15.6billioneuros.

OnMay18,2016,MicrosoftannouncedthesaleofNokia’sfeaturephonebusinesstoHMDandFoxconn’ssubsidiaryFujikangforUS$350million.NokiaalsoannouncedtheauthorizationofHMDtoproduceanewgenerationofNokia-brandedmobilephonesandtablets.Forcomputers,HMDwillhavetheexclusivegloballicensetoproduceNokia-brandedsmartphonesandtabletsinthenext10years.OnDecember1,2016,Nokiaannouncedthattheauthorizationofficiallytookeffect.

CorporateRenaissance

OnMarch13,2018,Solidium,aninvestmentfundoftheFinnishgovernment,purchased3.3%ofNokia’sstockfor844millioneuros(approximatelyUS$1.045billion).

InJuly2018,NokiaandChinaMobilesignedaframeworkagreementworth1billioneuros(approximatelyRMB7.774billion).ThismoveisalsoseenasadeepercooperationbetweenthetwopartiesinAIand5G.Inaddition,NokiawillalsoprovidehardwareandmanagementadviceduringthedeploymentofChinaMobile's5Gnetwork.

OnJuly27,2018,Nokiaannounceditsfinancialreportforthesecondquarterof2018.ThefinancialreportshowsthatNokia'snetsalesinthesecondquarterof2018were5.3billioneuros(approximatelyRMB42.2billion),ayear-on-yeardecreaseof1%comparedto2017.

InSeptember2018,Nokiaannouncedthelicensingfeefor5Gstandardessentialpatents:3Eurosperdevice.SinceNovember2012,NokiabegantoparticipateintheEuropeanUnion's27millioneurolarge-scalescientificresearchprojectMETIS,andbegantoplanforthedevelopmentof5Gtechnology,andin2013begantoconductpatentlayoutfor5Gtechnology.

ChinaMobileannouncedthe“AnnouncementonCentralizedPurchasingof5GNSAFunctionalUpgradeEquipmentforCoreNetworksin2019”.Huawei,ZTE,EricssonandNokiasuccessfullywonthebid.IntheMMEequipmentbidding,HuaweiandZTE,EricssonandNokia'swinningbidswere219,22,153and56setsrespectively;onSAE-GWequipment,Huawei,ZTE,EricssonandNokia'swinningbidswere369,21,231and60setsrespectively.
