Fromthefirstissuein1971to2008,the"TimesHigherEducationSupplement"hasbeenpublishedintheformofnewspapers.SinceJanuary2008,thepublishingformathaschangedtoamagazine,thepublishingcompanyTSLEducationLtd.(TSListheabbreviationofTimesSupplementsLimited).ThepublicationhasbeenpartoftheBritish"TheTimes"since1971.InOctober2005,"TheTimes"bossRupertMurdochsoldTSLEducation(includingthepublication)totheprivateequityfirmExponentfor235millionpounds..
SinceNovember2004,TimesHigherEducation(THE)hascooperatedwithQS(QuacquarelliSymonds)everyyeartopublishacommonworlduniversityranking,theTHE-QSWorldUniversityRankings,whichhasawiderangeofinfluence.Later,afterthelaunchoftherankingsin2009,thetwoofficiallydisbandedandbegantopublishtheirrespectiverankings.Sincethen,theyhavebeencalled"TimesHigherEducationWorldUniversityRankings(TimesHigherEducationWorldUniversityRankings)".
InMay2007,thejournalanditsparentcompanyTSLEducationwereacquiredbyprivateequityfirmCharterhouseCapitalPartnersatanundisclosedprice.
InDecember2008,"TheTimesHigherEducationSupplement"wasrenamed"TimesHigherEducation",andthepublishingformatchangedfromnewspapertomagazine.
Since2010,TimesHigherEducation(THE)andQShaveterminatedtheircooperation,andeachhasreleasedindependentworlduniversityrankings.TheTimesHigherEducationWorldUniversityRankings2010-2011(THEWorldUniversityRankings2010-2011)ReleasedonOctober16,2010.Reuters(ThomsonReuters)istheonlydataproviderfortheannualThamesWorldUniversityRankings.Inadditiontothemaincomprehensiverankingsandsubjectrankings,ithasalsolaunchedthesubsidiary"TimesHigherEducationWorldUniversityReputationRankings"(THEWorldReputationRankings2011)since2011.
In2012,forthefirsttime,therankingforcollegesanduniversitieslessthan50yearsoldwasreleased:"2012WorldYoungUniversityRankings"(YoungRankings2012).
OnMarch10,2013,theTimesHigherEducationAsianUniversityRankings(THEAsiaUniversityRankings2013)werereleasedforthefirsttime.
InJuly2013,TPGCapitalacquiredTSLEducationfromCharterhousefor£400million,andlaterTSLEducationwasrenamedTESGlobal(TESistheabbreviationofTimesEducationalSupplement).
OnJune18,2014(Londontime),theBritish"TimesHigherEducation"releasedthe2014AsianUniversityRankings.
OnOctober1,2014,"TimesHigherEducation"releasedthe2015WorldUniversityRankings.
OnOctober21,2016,"TimesHigherEducationWorldUniversityRankings2016-2017"wasreleased(THEWorldUniversityRankings2016-2017).
InApril2017,theBritish"TimesHigherEducation"announcedthe2017rankingsofyounguniversitiesintheworld.AtotalofthreeuniversitiesinHongKongenteredthetop20,andalltherankingsrose.
InMarch2017,therankingforJapaneseuniversitieswasreleasedforthefirsttime:"2017TimesHigherEducationRankingofJapaneseUniversities"(THEWorldUniversityランキングJapanEdition2017).

OnMay2,2019,theBritishTimesHigherEducationAsianUniversityRankingswerereleased.TsinghuaUniversityreplacedtheNationalUniversityofSingapore,whichhadbeenrankedfirstforthreeconsecutivetimes.Topofthelist.
OnJune27,2019,theresultsofTimesHigherEducation's2019YoungUniversityRankingswereannounced.351universitiesfrom60countriesaroundtheworldareonthelist.
InSeptember2019,theTimesHigherEducationintheUnitedKingdomannouncedthe2020WorldUniversityRankings.Thelistincludesnearly1,400highereducationinstitutionsin92countriesandregionsaroundtheworld.OxfordUniversityhastoppedthelistfor4consecutiveyears.CaliforniaThePolytechnicrankedsecond,andtheUniversityofCambridgerankedthird.
