Theproposalanddevelopmentofphotons—thequantumtheoryoflight
In1901,GermanphysicistPlanck(Plank)foundtheenergydistributionlawoftheabsoluteblackbodyradiationspectrumunderthermalequilibriumconsistentwiththeexperiment.Thislawisthestartingpointforthedevelopmentofquantumtheory.Thebasisofthislawistoassumethatmatterhasdiscontinuouscharacteristicsoflightemittedandabsorbed,andthatlightisemittedorabsorbedbyafinitepart-lightquanta.

Whentheystudiedaquantumopticaldevicecomposedofcircuits,theyfoundthatasinglephotonwouldmovethroughthesecircuits,andthesecircuitscouldalsobereconfiguredtochangethepathandpolarizationdirectionofthephoton.However,suchquantumopticalcircuitscannotquicklymanipulatesingle-photonandmulti-photonstates.Inordertosolvethisproblem,theyusedalithiumniobatewaveguidethathasbeenproventobecapableofrapidmanipulationinexistingcommunicationmodulators,andprovedthatapplyingavoltagetothewaveguideneartheelectrodecanquicklymanipulateoneortwowavelengthsof1550nanometers.Thequantum(includingpathandpolarization)stateoflightcomposedofaphotonisexactlythewavelengthusedintheexistingcommunicationnetwork.
DamienBonooftheUniversityofBristol,wholedtheresearch,said:“Inthisexperiment,wedemonstratedtwocircuitconfigurations.Eachcircuitconfigurationleadstoadifferentquantumstate.Configurationonlytakesafewnanoseconds.Inpreviousexperiments,thecircuitcanbereconfiguredeveryfewseconds.Communicationnetworksuseswitchesmadeofthesametechnologytotransmitinformationbytesencodedbyopticalpulseseveryday.Intermsoftheabove,suchaswitchcanalsobeusedatthesingle-photonlevel."
