Inthe18thcentury,therewererepeatedcivilstrifesinOman,andlocalleadersintheUAEdeclaredthemselvesEmirandbecameanindependentregime.Atthattime,bothArabmerchantshipsandEuropeanmerchantshipswererepeatedlyplunderedbysmallcountriesintheregion,sotheplacewascalledthe"piratecoast."
In1819,theBritishEastIndiaCompanydispatchedafleettodestroythecoastalfortressesofRasAlKhaimah,Sharjah,DubaiandotherplacestoensureasmoothroutefromIndiatoEgypt.
In1820,smallcountrieswereforcedtosignthe"GeneralPeaceTreatyofthePersianGulf"withBritain,agreeingtostoppiracy.However,theactuallootingdidnotgraduallyceaseuntilafter1835.
In1853,thesmallcountriesfinallysignedatreatyanddeclaredapermanenttruce.Afterthat,theareawascalled"TrusirOman"(meaning"peacefulOman"),inordertocooperatewithJiandumasThedifferencebetweenCarterandOman.
In1892,theTrusilOmancountriessignedatreatywiththeUnitedKingdom,acceptingtheexclusiveprotectionoftheUnitedKingdom,andwillnothaveindependentdiplomaticcontactswithanycountryotherthantheUnitedKingdom,andfallunderthecontroloftheBritishGeneralRepresentativeinthePersianGulf.
In1948,theUnitedKingdomsentaspecialofficialtothearea,stationedinSharjah,andmovedtoDubaiin1953.
In1952,Britainconvenedameetingoftheemirsofthe7localemirates,andthemeetingbecameanadvisorybodyforBritishpoliticalrepresentatives.
In1958,oilwasdiscoveredinAbuDhabi.
In1961,BritainsentanotherpoliticalrepresentativetoAbuDhabi.Theoilfieldwasformallydevelopedthefollowingyear,andoilbecamethemainstayofthelocaleconomy.
InJanuary1968,theUnitedKingdomannounceditswithdrawal.InFebruary,Bahrain,Qatar,AbuDhabi,Sharjah,Dubai,RasAlKhaimah,Ajman,Fujairah,UmmAlQaewanThenine-nationEmirmetinDubaiandagreedtoestablishtheUnitedArabEmirates.Aftervariousreasons,BahrainandQatarwithdrew.RasAlKhaimahalsodidnotagreetojoin.
InJuly1971,attheDubaiConference,theremainingsixcountriesformulatedaninterimconstitutionanddecidedtoestablishtheUnitedArabEmirateswithAbuDhabiastheinterimcapital.OnDecember2,theUAEannounceditsestablishment.
InFebruary1972,RasAlKhaimahjoinedtheUAE.
In1996,theinterimconstitutionwaspassedasapermanentconstitution,andAbuDhabibecametheofficialcapital.
OnNovember2,2004,thefirstpresidentoftheUAE,AbuDhabi’sEmirZayedbinSultanAlNahyan,passedaway.OnNovember3,hissonKhalifabinZayedAlNahyanwaselectedasthenewpresident.
In2005,PresidentKhalifabinZayedAlNahyanannouncedthathalfofthemembersoftheFederalNationalAssemblywillbeelectedandtheotherhalfwillstillbeappointed.
OnDecember16,2006,votingfortheFederalNationalAssemblybegan.ThisisthefirsttimeinUAEhistorythatsomemembersoftheFederalNationalAssemblyhavebeenelected.
OnOctober28,2015,hewaselectedasamemberoftheUnitedNationsHumanRightsCouncilforatermfrom2016to2018.

TheUAEislocatedintheeasternpartoftheArabianPeninsula,borderingthePersianGulfinthenorth,andhasacoastlineof734kilometers.ThewestandsouthborderwithSaudiArabia,andtheeastandnortheastborderOman.Itisafederationcomposedof7emiratesofAbuDhabi,Dubai,Sharjah,RasAlKhaimah,Fujairah,UmmAlQawanandAjmannation.ItisadjacenttoQatartothenorthwest,SaudiArabiatothewestandsouth,andOmantotheeastandnortheast,withatotalareaof8,3600squarekilometers.
Climaticcharacteristics
TheUnitedArabEmirateshasatropicaldesertclimate.Thesummerishotanddry(MaytoOctober),withatemperatureof40.6to48.2℃;inwinter(11toAprilofthefollowingyear),thetemperatureis8~20℃withoccasionalsandstorms.Theaverageprecipitationisabout100mm,mostlyconcentratedinJanuarytoFebruary.

TheUnitedArabEmiratesisrichinoilandnaturalgasresources.Asof2014,provedoilreserveswere13.34billiontons,accountingfor9.5%oftheworld'stotaloilreserves,ranking6thintheworld;naturalgasreserveswere214.4trillioncubicfeet(6.06trillioncubicmeters),ranking5thintheworld.

TheaboriginesoftheUnitedArabEmiratesareArabslikeotherresidentsonthepeninsula.TheirancestorsimmigratedeastwardcontinuouslyacrosstheArabianPeninsulafrom2000to3000yearsago,bringingtheirculture,languageandtheirsurvivalskillstothisdesertedplace.Aftertheyarrived,theymergedwiththeresidentsoftheareaandwerecalledSemites.
In2019,theUnitedArabEmirateshasapopulationof9.5million,andforeignersaccountfor88.5%,mainlyfromIndia,Pakistan,Egypt,Syria,Palestineandothercountries.

Government
TheUAEFederalSupremeCounciliscomposedofthechiefsofthe7emiratesandisthehighestauthority.Majordomesticandforeignpolicyissuesarediscussedanddecidedbythecommittee,formulatingnationalpolicies,reviewingthefederalbudget,andapprovinglawsandtreaties.ThePresidentandVicePresidentareelectedfromamongthemembersoftheSupremeCouncilforafive-yearterm.ThePresidentconcurrentlyservesasthecommander-in-chiefofthearmedforces.Inadditiontotherelativeunityofdiplomacyandnationaldefense,theemirateshaveconsiderableindependenceandautonomy.ThefederalfundsarebasicallybornebythetwoemiratesofAbuDhabiandDubai.
In2015,theUAE’spoliticalsituationwasstable,anditactivelypromotedeconomicdevelopmentandnationalmodernizationinternally;itwasactiveinforeignexchanges,focusingonstrengtheningrelationswithGulfcountriesandmajorpowers,andplayingauniqueroleinregionalandinternationalaffairs.
Constitution
OnJuly18,1971,theUAEFederalSupremeCouncilpassedtheinterimconstitutionanddeclaredtheinterimconstitutionintoeffectonDecember3ofthesameyear.InDecember1996,theHouseofChiefspassedaresolutiontoturnthe25-yearinterimconstitutionintoapermanentconstitution,andconfirmedAbuDhabiasthepermanentcapitaloftheUAE,allowedtheConstitutionReviewCommitteetoextenditsworkforoneyear,andproposedadditionalamendmentstothepermanentconstitution.
Parliament
TheFederalNationalAssembly,establishedin1972,isanadvisorybodywithatermof4years.Itisresponsiblefordiscussingthebillsputforwardbythecabinetmeetingandmakingrecommendationsforamendments.InAugust2006,theUAEpromulgatedanewparliamentaryelectionlaw,stipulating40membersoftheFederalNationalAssembly,ofwhich20arenominatedbythechiefsoftheemiratesandappointedbythepresident,andtheremaining20areelected.Thespeakerandtwovice-chairmenareelectedbytheparliament.ThisisregardedasanimportantsteptakenbytheUAEontheroadofdemocratizationreform.The16thNationalAssemblyelectionwasheldinSeptember2015,andAmalGubaishiwaselectedastheSpeakeroftheNationalAssemblyinNovember.
Judicature
ThehighestjudicialinstitutionintheUAEistheFederalSupremeCourt,whichiscomposedoftheChiefJusticeandapanelofnomorethan5judges,appointedbytheFederalSupremeCouncil.
Government

Overview
Beforethediscoveryofoilin1960,thebackboneoftheUAE'seconomywaspearls.After1960,itchangedtooil.
TheUAEisdominatedbyoilproductionandpetrochemicalindustries,whilefocusingonthedevelopmentofeconomicdiversification.Whiledevelopingthepetrochemicalindustry,thegovernmentregardsthedevelopmentofadiversifiedeconomy,theexpansionoftrade,andtheincreaseoftheproportionofnon-oilrevenuesintheGDPasitsprimarytasks.Itpaysattentiontotheuseofnaturalgasresourcesandthedevelopmentofcement,aluminumsmelting,plasticproducts,andconstruction.Materials,clothing,foodprocessingandotherindustriesattachgreatimportancetothedevelopmentofagriculture,animalhusbandry,andfishery;thegovernmentmakesfulluseofvariousfinancialsources,focusesonthedevelopmentofculture,education,andhealth,andcompletesandexpandsprojectsunderconstruction.
Pearl(pearlmining)wasonceapillarindustryintheUAE,andthissituationcontinueduntil1960.
SincethediscoveryofoilintheUAEin1966,theoriginalbarrendeserthassuddenlybecomearichoilfield,whichhascausedtremendouseconomicchangesinthiscountry.
TheEmirateofAbuDhabiaccountsformorethan90%oftheentireUAE’soilreserves,whileDubai’soilreservesarequitesmall.Therefore,AbuDhabicanberegardedasarealoilcountry.AndDubai'sprosperityisnotbecauseofoil.BecauseDubaifirmlybelievesthat“becomingsecondwillstarvetodeath”,inthepast10years,itsGDPhasgrownby230%,ofwhichoilrevenueaccountedforonly6%,anditmayrunoutin2010.Itsdevelopmentandconstructionareall-roundanddiversified.Thecanalwasopenedinthe1970s,tradewasconductedinthe1980s,andtourismwaspromotedinthe1990s.Bythe21stcentury,ithasbecomeatransitcenter,sightseeingandshoppingcity,andatechnologicalnetworkcityintheMiddleEast.ThetourismeconomyhasbecomeoneofDubai'smainsourcesofeconomicincome.Inaddition,AbuDhabi'stourismindustryisalsoquitedeveloped,withanaverageannualgrowthrateof15-20%.TouristswithbusinesspurposesareofgreatimportancetothehotelindustryinAbuDhabi.Duringsomemajorconferencesandtradefairs,thehotelroomutilizationratecanreach100%.Inrecentyears,percapitaGDPhasrankedamongthetoptenintheworld.Sincethe21stcentury,theUnitedArabEmirateshasdevelopedthecivilaviationindustry.Forexample,theAbuDhabiroyalfamilyinvestedEtihadAirlines(الإتّحاد,Etihad)andtheDubairoyalfamilyinvestedArabEmirates(طَيَرات,Emirates).Rapiddevelopment,withatotalofhundredsofcivilaircrafts,andthedevelopmentofaglobalairtransshipmentnetworkwithAbuDhabiandDubaiasthecore,anditsmarketsharecanbedescribedasthehighestintheMiddleEast.
TheUAEalsousesalargenumberofmigrantworkers.AccordingtothestatisticsofthePhilippinegovernment,amongoverseasFilipinos,FilipinosemployedintheUAEoccupythethirdplace.Inaddition,therearealargenumberoflaborersfromMuslimcountries.
Inmid-March2013,theworld’slargestcentralizedsolarpowerstation,"Shams1",whichcost600millionUSdollars,waslocatedinZayed,about150kilometerssouthwestofAbuDhabi.ThedesertareaontheoutskirtsofGermanywascompleted.Itcoversanareaof2.5squarekilometersandhasapowergenerationcapacityof100megawatts.Itcanprovideelectricityto20,000households.

Agriculture,forestry,livestockandfishery
AgricultureintheUAEisunderdeveloped.Theoutputvalueofagriculture,animalhusbandryandforestryintheUAEaccountsfor3%ofGDP.Thecountryhas320,000hectaresofarablelandand270,000hectaresofcultivatedland.Themainagriculturalproductsaredates,corn,vegetables,lemonsandsoon.Fooddependsonimports.Thereare4,589fishingboatsand12,856fishermenintheUAE.Fisheryproductsanddatescanmeetdomesticdemand.Thelivestockindustryisverysmall,andthemainmeatproductsdependonimports.Thegovernmenthasadoptedapolicyofencouragingfarming,providingfarmerswithfreeseeds,fertilizersandinterest-freeloans,andunderwritingallagriculturalproductstoensurefarmers’income,andAfghanagriculturehasdevelopedrapidly.
Industry
TheUAEisdominatedbythepetrochemicalindustry.Inaddition,thereareindustriessuchasnaturalgasliquefaction,aluminumsmelting,plasticproducts,constructionmaterials,clothingandfoodprocessing.ThetotalinvestmentinindustrialprojectsintheUAEisnearly10billionU.S.dollars.Amongthenumberofpeopleemployedinindustrialprojects,Emiratiaccountedforonly1%.Therefore,thegovernmentembarkedonthe"nationalizationofemployment"plantoincreasetheproportionofnationalemployment.In2009,Algeria'snaturalgasproductionwas65billioncubicmeters,andin2011itincreasedto80billioncubicmeters.Ninety-sevenpercentofthecountry'selectricityisproducedbynaturalgas.
TheUAE'soilproductionstartedin1958.Afterthedevelopmentandconstructionofworld-classoilcompaniessuchasRoyalDutchShell,BritishPetroleumandTotalinthe1960s,UAEgraduallyrealizedoilnationalizationthroughholdings..Itbegantoexportoilin1962,becomingtheworld'sfifthlargestcrudeoilexporterandthesecondlargestcrudeoilproducerinArabia.In1988,AzerbaijanestablishedtheSupremePetroleumCommittee,whichisresponsibleforformulatingoilandgas-relatedpoliciesandpromulgatingresolutionsonoilandgasproduction.Foreignequitycompaniesareresponsiblefortechnology,productionandmanagement.TheSupremePetroleumCommissionhasestablishedanewtypeofstrategicpartnershiporstrategicalliancewithpowerfuldomesticandinternationalenergycompanies.Companiesthatworkcloselywiththecommitteeinclude:RoyalDutchShellGroup,Total,BritishPetroleum,ExxonMobil,PortugalPetroleumandNaturalGas,andJapanPetroleumCorporation.Crudeoilproductionreached2.57millionbarrelsperdayin2008,2.7millionbarrelsin2009,and2.69millionbarrelsinSeptember2012.Amongthem,thecrudeoilproductionoftheEmirateofAbuDhabiaccountsfor97%ofthecountry'stotalcrudeoilproduction.
MostofthecrudeoilproducedintheUAEisexported.In2008,91%ofAfghancrudeoilproductionwasusedforexport,ofwhich97%weresoldtoEastAsianmarketssuchasJapan.Afghancrudeoilexportsareincreasingyearbyyear.In2009,itexported2.536millionbarrelsofcrudeoilperday.Inthefirsthalfof2010,itwas2.591millionbarrels.In2013,itwillincreaseby2.872millionbarrels.
TheUAE'sdomesticdemandforpetroleumderivativescontinuestorise.In2009,thesalesvolumeofpetroleumderivativesinthelocalmarketinAfghanistanwas5.6milliontons,withanaveragedailysalesvolumeof15,500tons,whichwasbasicallythesameasin2008.Comparedwith2005,theconsumptionofgasolineincreasedfrom75,300barrelsto86,900barrelsin2008,thedailyconsumptionofkeroseneincreasedfrom3,600barrelsto4,500barrels,andthedailyconsumptionoftarincreasedfrom87,000barrelsto98,800barrels.
