ZouTaofen,bornonNovember5,1895inXiadu,Yong'anCity,FujianProvincevillage.HisgrandfatherZouShuyu,namedXiaocun,hadbeenadmittedtotheQingDynastybeforemiddleschool.FatherZouGuozhen,namedYongqian.ThemotheroftheZhafamily,aftertheZhafamilyinHaining,Zhejiang,marriedtotheZoufamilyattheageof15.Threeboysandthreegirlswereborn,andZouTaoFenlivedforthelongest.
In1899,ZouTaofen'sgrandfatherretiredwhenhewasold,andhisfathertookhisfamilyasanalternateofficerinFuzhou.Atthistime,theZoufamily'sfamilyhasbeenindecline,andlifeisinshortsupply.Astheeldestson,ZouTaofenexperiencedthehardshipsandhardshipsoflifesincechildhood.

InSeptember1919,ZouTaofenbrokethroughandenteredthethirdyearofliberalartsatShanghaiSt.John’sUniversity.
Graduationwork
InJuly1921,TaofenZougraduatedwithabachelorofartsdegree.Hewantedtoenterthepress,buthedidn'tgetachanceforawhile.ItcoincidedthattheShanghaiHealthandWelfareGauzeExchangeneededanEnglishsecretary,andZouTaofentookofficeandbecameastaffmemberintheindustrialandcommercialworld.Afterthat,TaofenZouworkedpart-timeinShanghaivocationaleducationinstitutions,doingsomewritingandtranslation.
In1922,afterHuangYanpei'sintroduction,ZouTaofenservedasthedirectoroftheeditorialdepartmentoftheChinaVocationalEducationSocietyandwasresponsiblefortheeditor-in-chiefofthemonthly"EducationandVocation"andthe"VocationalEducationSeries".Heparticipatedinthecareerguidancemovementinitiatedbytheagency,andwenttoNingbo,Nanjing,Wuhan,Jinanandotherplacesforinspectiontogetherwithhiscolleagues.ThisisZouTaofen'sfirstinvestigationandresearchinsociety.
Astheeditor-in-chief
InOctober1926,theformereditor-in-chiefofLifeWeeklywastransferredtothebankingindustry,andTaoFenZouassumedtheeditorialresponsibilityofLifeWeekly.TaofenZouwasabletoengageinthenewsandpublishingworkhedreamedof.HedecidedtomakeadrasticinnovationtoLifeWeeklyfromcontenttoformaccordingtotheneedsofsocietyandreaders.Hedeterminedthatthepurposeofthemagazineis"suggestinglifeaccomplishment,arousingthespiritofservice,andstrivingforsocialtransformation".TaofenisthepennameheusedwhenheeditedLifeWeekly.Thereasonwhyhechosethispennameistoencouragehimself.
In1930,inordertomeettheincreasingdemandofreaders,ZouTaofenestablishedthe"BookandNewsAgencyDepartment"tospecializeinreaderservicebusiness.Later,itgraduallydevelopedintofivebranchesandofficesnationwide.Therearesixtylifebookstores.
Patrioticsalvation
OnSeptember26,1931,eightdaysafterthe"September18Incident",ZouTaofenreportedtheincidentinLifeWeekly.Fromthistimeon,ZouTaofenneverputdownhispeninordertopropagatetheanti-Japanesewar.Atthesametime,healsousedtheinfluenceof"LifeWeekly"amongreaderstoorganizedonationsforfront-lineanti-Japanesesoldiers.HerepeatedlycriticizedtheKuomintanggovernment'scompromisebehaviorinresponsetothesituationoftheWarofResistanceAgainstJapan.Heactivelysupportspatrioticmovementsinvariousplaces,andraisesfundsforthe19thRouteArmyandotherpatrioticpatriots,runningandshouting."LifeWeekly"heldhighthebannerof"resistingJapanandsavingthecountry"andbecameapositionofpublicopinioncenteredonpropagatingunityinthewarofresistanceandcondemningsurrenderandtraitorouscountry.
InJanuary1933,TaofenZoujoinedtheChinaCivilRightsProtectionAllianceorganizedbySoongChingLing,CaiYuanpei,LuXunandothers,andwaselectedasanexecutivecommitteemember.Afterthat,heactivelyparticipatedinthedemocraticmovementforpeople'sfreedomandrights.ThepersecutionsufferedbyhimandLifeWeeklyfollowedoneafteranother.
Exiledoverseas
OnJune18,1933,YangXingfo,apatrioticdemocrat,wasassassinatedbyagentsoftheKMTLanyiSociety,andZouTaofenwasalsoblacklisted.OnJuly14ofthatyear,TaoFenZouwenttoEuropeandbeganhisfirstlifeinexile.HevisitedItaly,Switzerland,France,Britain,Germany,theSovietUnion,andtheUnitedStatessuccessively,collectedalotofvaluablematerials,andmadealotoftipsonwhathesawandheardalongtheway.Attheendoftheyear,"LifeWeekly"wasblockedbytheKuomintanggovernment.Aftertwoyearsofon-siteinvestigationsandstudytoursabroad,ZouTaofen'sthinkinghasmadegreatprogressandimprovement,andhegraduallytransferredhisposition,viewpointsandmethodstoMarxism.
ResolutelyreturntoChina
InMay1935,the"NewLifeIncident"occurred.TheKuomintanggovernmentclosedthe"NewLife"magazineandarrestedtheeditor-in-chiefDuChongyuan.ZouTaofenexpresseddeepdissatisfactionwiththis.InAugustofthesameyear,helefttheUnitedStatesandreturnedtoChina.AfterreturningtoChina,ZouTaofenactivelyparticipatedintheanti-Japanesenationalsalvationmovement.
OnNovember16,1935,hefoundedtheweekly"PopularLife"inShanghai.Soon,the"DecemberNinethMovement"brokeout,and"PopularLife"gavestrongsupporttothisraginganti-Japanesenationalsalvationmovement.ZouTaofenpublishedaseriesofcommentsinthenewspapers,denouncedthetraitorousbehavioroftheKuomintangauthorities,andvigorouslypropagatedandenthusiasticallysupportedthestudents'patrioticsalvationmovement.Hehighlypraisedthestudentsalvationmovement:"Thisisthevanguardofthemassmovement,thedawnofthefutureofnationalliberation!"Heappealedtoallpeoplewhoreallypresupposethestrugglefornationalliberation,should"togetherraisethebannerofthenationalliberationstrugglewithblood.Sincerelysupportthestudentsalvationmovementandpromotethewholenation’shardwork!”Themagazinewasthuswarmlywelcomedbythegeneralpublic.InDecemberofthesameyear,thesalesvolumereached200,000copies,surpassingtheoriginal"LifeWeek",breakingthepublicationofChinesemagazinesatthetime.Record.AlsoinDecember,he,togetherwithShenJunru,LiLinsi,andothers,organizedandestablishedtheShanghaiCulturalCircleSalvationCouncil,andwaselectedasanexecutivecommitteemember.
ThereactionarypartypersonallyattackedZouTaofenhimself,andstrictlyrestricted"PopularLife",prohibitingitfrombeingsoldinvariousplacesandmailedfromthepostoffice.TheyalsosentpoliticallobbyistsoneafteranothertowinoverandlureZouTaointosubmission.Inthisregard,ZouTaofenclearlystated:“Ifyoudon’tparticipateinthenationalsalvationmovement,youmustdoyourbesttostandattheforefrontandputyourlifeanddeathoutearly.”
PropagandaagainstJapan
OnFebruary29,1936,"PopularLife"waspublishedtothe16thissueandwassealedbytheKuomintanggovernment.ZouTaofenleftShanghaiforHongKonginMarch1936.Inordertobeabletopubliclypublishhispropositionsforthewarofresistanceandnationalsalvationandspreadinformationfromvariousplaces,soonafterhearrivedinHongKong,hebegantoorganizethe"LifeDaily"withhisfriendJinZhonghua.Aftermonthsofhardworkdayandnight,the"LifeDaily"wasfinallypublishedonJune7.Inhispublishedspeech,ZouTaofenclearlystatedthat"thetwomainpurposesofthisnewspaperaretopromotenationalliberationandactivelypromotepopularculture",andstriveto"reflectthemosturgentrequirementsofthepeopleofthecountryatthisstagefromthepeople'sstandpoint."Afterthepublicationofthenewspaper,itactivelypromotedtheanti-Japanesewarandnationalsalvationideas.Inlessthantwomonths,ithadafar-reachingimpactandstronglypromotedthepatrioticsalvationmovementinthesouthwest.However,inviewofHongKong'spartialsecurity,inconvenientgeographicallocation,andblockedinformation,ZouTaofenthenannouncedthemovetoShanghaiforpublicationonAugust1attherequestofreaders.
OnMay31,1936,ZouTaofen,ShenJunruandothersrespondedtothecalloftheCommunistPartyofChinatoestablishananti-Japanesenationalunitedfront.Thejointstatementof"Requirements"requirestheKuomintanggovernmenttostopthecivilwarandunitetheRedArmytofightagainstJapan.OnJuly31ofthesameyear,ZouTaofen,ShenJunru,TaoXingzhi,ZhangNaiqiandotherfourpeoplejointlyissuedanopenletter"SeveralBasicConditionsandMinimumRequirementsforUnityandAnti-Insults",furtherelaboratingontheNationalSalvationCongress'spropositionsforresistingtheenemyandsavingthecountry.Thearticleanalyzedthedomesticsituationandpointedoutthatatthetimeofthenationalcrisis,allpartiesandpartiesacrossthecountryshouldstoptheirdisputesand"jointogethertoresistJapanandsavethecountry."Inparticular,theyagreedwiththeCommunistParty’sproposaltoestablishananti-Japanesenationalunitedfront,andcalledonChiangKai-shekandtheKuomintanggovernmentto"hurryupandpromotetheestablishmentofaunitedfrontfornationalsalvation,expeditetheeliminationofpastprejudices,anduniteallpartiesandfactionstofightagainstJapanandsavethecountry."Struggle.”Theletterplayedanimportantroleinpromotingtheestablishmentofajointanti-Japanesenationalsalvationfront.

InthemiddleofthenightofNovember22,1936,theKuomintanggovernmentarrestedZouTaofenandotherleadersoftheNationalSalvationAssociationShenJunru,LiGongpu,ShaQianli,ShiLiang,ZhangNaiqi,andWangZaoshiforthecrimeof"endangeringtheRepublicofChina."Sevenpeoplecreatedthe"SevenGentlemenIncident"thatshockedChinaandforeigncountries.TheKMT’sperverseactionsarousedtheangerandinjusticeofthepeopleacrossthecountry.Alloverthecountryorganizedparades,ralliesandotheractivitiestodenouncetheKMTgovernmentandstronglydemandedthereleaseofthe7patriotsimprisoned.Inthe243daysoflifeinprison,ZouTaofenhasalwaysbeenastrongpatrioticanddemocraticfighter,confrontingthereactionariestit-for-tat,"unyieldinginwar,"showingfearlessrevolutionarystyleandheroicfightingspirit.
TheNationalWarofResistance
Afterthe"July7Incident"in1937,underthestrongpressureofthepeopleacrossthecountry,onJuly31,theKuomintangauthoritieshadtoreleaseZouTaofenandother7peoplefromprison..FacedwiththesupportandeffortsoftheChinesepeople,ZouTaofenwasverymoved.Hesaidsincerely:"Theonlywayforustorepayistoworkharderonthenationalsalvationmovementandworkharderforthewelfareofthepublic."
8ofthesameyearOnthe19th,ZouTaofenfoundedthe"Anti-JapaneseWar"three-daymagazineinShanghai.InJulyofthefollowingyear,themagazinemergedwithLiuShi's"QuanMin"weeklymagazineandchangeditsnametothe"NationalAnti-JapaneseWar"three-daypublication.Inordertomeetthepatrioticanddemocraticrequirementsoffriendsfromallwalksoflifeacrossthecountry,healsosuccessivelypublishedthe5thbattlefieldeditionof"NationalAnti-JapaneseWar"andthepopularweeklyeditionof"NationalAnti-JapaneseWar",andpublishedthe6theditionofAnti-JapaneseWarPictorialinShanghai.Thesepublicationsallfocusedonpropagatingtheanti-Japanesewarandsavingthecountryandstrivingfordemocraticrights.Thescopeandinfluenceofthesepublicationswereveryrareatthattime.Thesalesvolumeof"NationalAnti-JapaneseWar"exceeded300,000copies,rankingfirstinthecirculationofpublicationsinthecountry,inspiringthefightingspiritagainstJapanesefascism,andeffectivelypromotingthedevelopmentofthepatrioticdemocraticmovement.InlateDecemberofthesameyear,ImetwithZhouEnlaiattheWuhanOfficeoftheEighthRouteArmy.
LeavingChongqingtogotoHongKong
SinceApril1939,theKuomintangauthoritieshavesuccessivelyclosedorforcedtheclosureoflifebookstorebranches;allbookspublishedareprohibitedorconfiscated,evenafterpassingthroughTherearenoexceptionsforreviewandregistrationwiththeMinistryoftheInterior.ByFebruaryofthe30thyearoftheRepublicofChina(1941),withtheexceptionoftheChongqingbranch,morethan50branchesofLifeBookstoreintheKuomintangControlledAreawereclosed,andallemployeeswerearrestedordismissed.ZouTaofenwasfuriousatthisandmadestrongproteststotheKuomintanggovernmentoneafteranother.
OnFebruary15,1941,asthefirstmeetingoftheSecondNationalCongresswasabouttoopen,ZouTaofuriouslyresignedfromhispostasanationalpolitician,leftChongqinginsecret,andarrivedinHongKong.Hewasdeterminedto"mayWiththeuprightresignationaction,thepeopleofthecountryhavearousedthedeepattentionandadvancementofpoliticalreform."AfterZouTaofenarrivedinHongKong,hewasmoreactivelycommittedtopoliticalactivitiesandscreamedfortherealizationofdemocraticpolitics.HeexpressedastrongpatrioticspiritforconspiringtosellthecountryandsabotagetheevilforcesoftheWarofResistance.Hepledgedhisdeterminationtofighttheevilforcestotheend.
OnMay17,1941,TaoFenZoure-run"PopularLife"inHongKong.Inhisreissuedspeech,hescreamed:"Theurgentproblemfacingthepeopleofthewholecountryishowtoeliminatethecrisisofdivision,consolidateunityandunity,andestablishdemocraticpolitics,sothatthewarofresistancewillpersisttotheendtoachievethefinalvictory."Afterthepublicationwaspublished,itwaswarmlywelcomedbyreadersathomeandabroad,andthenumberofsalessoonreached100,000copies.
OnJune7thofthesameyear,TaofenZouand9peopleincludingMaoDun,Changjiang,JinZhonghua,therepresentativesoftheNationalSalvationAssociationtostayinHongKong,jointlypublishedthearticle"OurAttitudesandPropositionsonStateAffairs",furtherexpressingtherequestfordemocraticpoliticalreforms.Strongdesire.
ZouTaofenoftenactsasawriterandpublishesarticlestostatehispoliticalviewsintheEnglishbimonthlyjournalofthe"DefenseLeagueofChina"andthe"SalvationSeries"runbycolleaguesoftheNationalSalvationCongress.Inaddition,basedonhispersonalexperienceandfeelings,hewrotealonghistoricalmaterial"SincetheWarofResistance",intendedtouseopenwordsanddeedsforthebrightfutureofChinesepoliticsandthebrightfutureofChina’swarofresistanceandnationalsalvation.Awarenessandeffortstoreform".
Dyingforever
OnDecember25,1941,HongKongfell,andZouTaofenhadtogointoexileagain.WiththehelpoftheCCP,ZouTaofenwenttoDongjiangandtheanti-JapanesebaseareasinnorthernJiangsu.Hecarefullyinspectedtheconditionsoftheanti-Japanesebaseareas,visitedandvisitedmanyschools,andworkedwithlocalsoldiersandcivilians.Hesaid:"Ihavebeenengagedinthedemocraticmovementforthepasttenyears.Ionlysawtherealdemocracytoday."

OnJuly24,1944,ZouTaofendiedinShanghaiattheageof48.
OnSeptember28,1944,theCentralCommitteeoftheCommunistPartyofChinaratifiedhimasanofficialmemberoftheCommunistPartyofChinaandspokehighlyofhislifeandhiscareer.

ZouTaofenactivelyparticipatedintheanti-Japanesenationalsalvationmovement.AfterreturningtoChina,hefoundedtheweeklymagazine"PopularLife"inShanghai,andonceclearlysupportedthepatrioticmovementoftheJanuaryandFebruary9thstudents.Duringtheperiod,heservedastheleadershipoftheShanghaiNationalSalvationAssociationandtheNationalSalvationFederationofallwalksoflife.InNovemberofthe35thyearoftheRepublicofChina(1936),heandotherleadersoftheNationalSalvationCongress,ShenJunru,werearrestedbytheKuomintangauthoritiesforactivelypropagatingtheAnti-JapaneseWar,andbecameoneofthefamousSevenGentlemenoftheNationalSalvationCongress.
