In 1971, in view of the serious shortage of tertiary degrees in Hong Kong at that time, it provided high school graduates with opportunities for further studies. Zhong Qirong resigned from the post of Dean of the Faculty of Letters and Social Sciences at Hong Kong Baptist College (now Hong Kong Baptist University). Hu Honglie invested all the wealth he earned as a barrister in founding a university and bought a 3-storey building on Cheng Wo Road in Happy Valley. Small bungalows are used as classrooms.

In 1978, the British Hong Kong government allocated a piece of land at Braemar Hill as the permanent site of Shue Yan College at that time. He insisted on laying 176 piles to build a 12-story university building. At that time, the British Hong Kong government suggested that the three tertiary colleges of Shue Yan College (now Hong Kong Shue Yan University), Lingnan College (now Hong Kong Lingnan University) and Baptist College (now Hong Kong Baptist University) should be changed to "two-year preparatory course, two-year junior college and One year of academic education" and financial assistance provided by it, but Shuren insisted on a four-year system and did not receive funding from the British Hong Kong government. He had been neglected by the British Hong Kong government at that time, and Shuren's development was severely restricted.

In 1999, due to the education reform proposal issued by the Education Commission of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, Shuren was mistakenly included in the "Continuing Education Institute" and degraded its legal status. Shuren gathered a variety of forces to set up the "Committee for Shuren to Become a Private University" to strive for support, and the university was recognized and received a wide range of positive responses.

In 2000, the Hong Kong Education and Manpower Bureau provided HK$4.6 million for its upgrading and evaluation fees, officially embarking on the road of upgrading and rectification.

In 2001, Shue Yan College passed the accreditation of the Hong Kong Council for Academic Accreditation and was approved to offer 4 honours bachelor's degree programs, and revised the tertiary college regulations to become the first Hong Kong to award an honours bachelor's degree. Private institutions of higher learning, but they have not yet been renamed universities.

In 2005, Shuren's third main building, the Dormitory Wenkang Building, was finally completed after three years of construction, and it began to take shape as a university.

In 2006, the Hong Kong Council for Academic Accreditation completed the last academic review of Shuren and formally passed its governance and quality assurance mechanism. In the same year, it was confirmed that Shuren had the qualifications for self-assessment. The Chief Executive in conjunction with the Executive Council decided to approve Shue Yan's name as "Hong Kong Shue Yan University", with immediate effect, becoming Hong Kong's first statutory financially self-financing university.

In 2017, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government funded the establishment of the research institute complex.

In 2018, the Chief Executive of Hong Kong ordered the approval of Hong Kong Shue Yan University to award master's and doctoral degrees in multiple courses.

The Department of Chinese Literature was established when Shuren was founded.
