RFC2544 performance test

Definition

RFC1242 performance test, calibration term for network interconnection equipment.

Four tests are defined:

throughput, delay, frame loss rate, back-to-back.

Introduction to the RFC2544 protocol:

The RFC2544 protocol is an international standard proposed by the RFC organization for evaluating network interconnection equipment (firewall, IDS, Switch, etc.). It mainly provides more detailed regulations on the specific test methods and results submission form of the performance evaluation parameters defined in RFC1242.

Test parameters

RFC2544 stipulates many parameters for testing different network devices. The following mainly introduces the four most important parameters.

(1) Throughput

·Definition: The maximum data flow that the device under test can forward without packet loss. It is usually measured by the maximum number of data packets or bytes passed per second (MB/s).

·Function: Reflect the maximum data flow that the device under test can handle (without losing data packets).

(2) Loss Rate (LostRate)

·Definition: Under a certain load, the percentage of packets that cannot be forwarded due to lack of resources to the number of packets that should be forwarded .

·Function: Reflect the ability of the device under test to withstand a specific load.

(3)Latency

·Definition: Send a certain number of data packets, record the time T1 when the intermediate data packets are sent, and reach the receiving port after being forwarded by the test equipment The time T2 is calculated according to the following formula:

For storage/bit forwarding equipment: Latency=T2-T1

T2: The time when the first bit of the output frame arrives at the output port ;

T1: The time when the last bit of the input frame arrives at the input port.

·Function: Reflect the speed of processing data packets by the device under test.

(4)Back-to-Back

·Definition: Send a data packet of a certain length at the maximum rate that can be generated, and constantly change the data sent once The number of data packets, until the device under test can completely forward all sent data packets, this packet number is the back-to-back value of this device.

·Function: Reflect the ability of the device under test to process burst data (data caching capability).
