InSeptember1917,theNationalNanjingHigherNormalSchool(thepredecessoroftheNationalCentralUniversity)establishedabusinessmajor,afamoussocialactivistandpatrioticdemocratYangXingfoisthedirectorofthebusinessdepartment.InSeptember1921,thebusinessdepartmentwasexpandedandreorganizedandmovedfromNanjingtoShanghai.ItwaschangedtotheNationalSoutheastUniversityandJinanSchooltojointlyestablishShanghaiUniversityofCommerce,whichwastheearliestbusinessuniversityinChina.InJuly1922,theschoolwaschangedtotheNationalSoutheastUniversityandtheShanghaiUniversityofCommercewasestablished.Thefamouseducatorandthefirstprincipaloftheschool,GuoBingwen,andthefamouseconomistanddeanoftheschool,MaYinchu,bothgraduatedfromColumbiaUniversity.TheyarecommittedtopromotingmodernbusinessinChina.Duringthe1923to1924academicyear,amongthe16ChinesefacultymembersofShanghaiUniversityofCommerce,therewereElevengraduatedfromprestigiousAmericanuniversitiessuchasHarvardUniversity,ColumbiaUniversity,andUniversityofPennsylvania.
InJuly1927,itwasrenamedtheNationalFourthZhongshanUniversityBusinessSchool.
InFebruary1928,itwasrenamedtheBusinessSchoolofJiangsuUniversity.

InAugust1932,theNationalCentralUniversityBusinessSchoolwasestablishedindependentlyandnamedtheNationalShanghaiBusinessSchool,whichwastheonlyoneinChina.Nationalundergraduatecollegesanduniversitiesinbusiness,directlyundertheleadershipoftheMinistryofEducation.Inthesamemonth,theEconomicsDepartmentofNationalLaborUniversitywasmergedintotheschool.

OnAugust13,1937,theAugust13Incidentbrokeout.TheschoolbuildingwasdestroyedbyJapaneseartilleryfire,andtheschoolmovedtotheShanghaiConcession.RunaschooluntilthevictoryoftheAnti-JapaneseWar.Attheendof1941,theJapanesearmyoccupiedtheShanghaiconcession.OnFebruary20,1942,inordertocontinueteaching,theNationalShanghaiBusinessSchoolwaschangedtoaprivateShanghaiBusinessSchool.OnMarch6,DeanPeiFuhengwrotetotheMinistryofEducationonthereasonsandcircumstancesoftheschool’schangefromastate-ownedschooltoa“private”school.InAugust,theprivateShanghaiBusinessSchoolwas"accepted"bytheWangPuppetregime,andtheschoolwaschangedto"national".AfterthevictoryoftheAnti-JapaneseWarin1945,theNationalShanghaiBusinessSchoolreturnedtothehandsoftheNationalGovernment.
In1946,thefirstinsurancedepartmentofaChineseuniversitywasestablished.

August2,1950,renamedItistheShanghaiInstituteofFinanceandEconomics.Atthesametime,theanniversaryoftheschoolwassettobeJune27(after1985,itwaschangedtoSeptember17).Inthesamemonth,ShanghaiLawSchoolwasmergedintotheschool.OnAugust30,1950,theEastChinaMilitaryandPoliticalCommitteesentalettertotheschool.Afterthenamechange,itwasledbytheEastChinaMilitaryandPoliticalCommitteeFinanceandEconomicsCommitteeandtheMinistryofEducation,withtheEastChinaFinanceandEconomicCommitteeasthemainstay.
