Foundingoftheschool
SimonFraserUniversityisbasedontheNorthwestGroupofCanadaNamedbytraderandexplorerSimonFraser.In1962,JohnB.MacdonaldmadeareportonBritishColumbia'sEducationandFuturePlans,andheproposedtoestablishanewuniversityinthecontinentallowlandsofBritishColumbia.OnMarch1,1963,theLegislatureofBritishColumbiaofficiallyapprovedtheestablishmentofSimonFraserUniversityinBurnaby,Vancouver.InMayofthesameyear,atthesuggestionofthefirstprincipalGordonM.Shrum,theprovincialgovernmentdecidedtobuildthecampusonBurnabyMountain,whichis365metersabovesealevel.Inthespringof1964,thebuildingandcampusdesignedbyarchitectsArthurEricksonandGeoffreyMasseyofficiallystartedconstruction.OnSeptember9,1965,SimonFraserUniversitywelcomeditsfirstclassof2500students.
Earlyactivism
Sincethe1960s,asahotbedofpoliticalactivism,ideologicaldifferencesbetweentheDepartmentofPoliticalScience,theDepartmentofSociology,andtheDepartmentofAnthropologyhaveunfoldedThefiercedebatereacheditspeakinthe1970s.Theresolutionofthiscrisissplitthesedepartmentsintorelativelyindependentdepartmentstoday.

In2009,SimonFraserUniversitybecamethefirstmemberoftheAmericanCollegeAthleticAssociation(NCAA)inCanada.Fromthebeginningofthe2011to2012season,SFUhas19sportsteamsthathavejoinedtheNCAAcompetition.Atthesametime,SimonFraserUniversityhasthehighestacademicinfluenceamongallcomprehensiveuniversitiesinCanada.Everyyear,inthecompetitionbetweentheNationalNaturalScienceFoundationofCanadaandtheNationalSocialScienceFoundationofCanada,SFUteachersandstudentshavethehighestsuccessrate.Since2007,throughcooperationwithuniversitiesaroundtheworld,SFUhasbeguntoawarddualdegreediplomas.Forexample:CooperatingwithZhejiangUniversityinChinatograntadoubledegreeincomputerscience,andcooperatingwithMonashUniversityinAustraliatograntabachelorofartsdegree,etc.September9,2015,SimonFraserUniversitycelebratedits50thanniversary.Inthepast50years,theschoolhastrainedatotalof130,000graduates.

Asof2016,SimonFraserUniversityhas29,591undergraduates,amongthem14,911arefull-timestudents.Withtherapiddevelopmentoftheschool,morethan130,000graduateshavebeentrained.SFUcurrentlyhas946teachersand3403employees.Inthefallsemesterof2012,4269internationalstudentsregistered,whichincreasedthenumberofundergraduatesatSFUby17%andbecameoneoftheuniversitieswiththelargestnumberofundergraduatesinCanada.Amongtheseinternationalstudents,morethan60%arefromMainlandChina,6%arefromHongKong,China,and6%arefromSouthKorea.TheSimonFraserUniversityStudentSocietyiscalledtheSimonFraserStudentSociety(SFSS).

Asof2016,SimonFraserUniversityhasmorethan5,000graduatestudents.Internationalstudentsaccountfor20%ofthetotalnumberofgraduatestudents,and30%-40%oftheseinternationalstudentsareengagedinresearchinnaturalsciencesandengineeringtechnology.Atthesametime,SimonFraserUniversityalsohasagraduateschool.
SchoolConstruction
SimonFraserUniversityhasthreecampuseslocatedinthreedifferentcitiesintheGreaterVancouverarea.ThemaincampusislocatedinthehillsofBurnabyCampus,theVancouverCampusislocatedindowntownVancouver,whichislinedwithskyscrapers,andtheSurreyCampusislocatedinthecitycentershoppingmall.Inrecentyears,theVancouverCampushasbeenexpanded.Forexample,theSiegelGraduateSchoolofEconomicshasbeenexpanded.
Thethreecampusescanbereacheddirectlybypublictransportation.TheVancouvercampusisonlyoneblockawayfromtheWaterfrontSkytrainStation.TheSurreycampusisclosetotheSurreyCentralSkytrainStation.TheBurnabycampusisconnectedtotheProductionWay-UniversitySkytrainStationandtheSperling-BurnabyLakeSkytrainStationthroughashuttleservice.
BurnabyCampus
TheBurnabycampusislocatedonBurnabyMountain,365metersabovesealevel,overlookingtheentirenorthernareaofBurnaby.Mostoftheschool’sdepartmentsarelocatedintheBurnabycampus
area.ThemaincampuswasfoundedwhenW.A.C.Bennard,thechairmanoftheSocialCreditPartyofBritishColumbia,wasthegovernor,andthelibraryonthemaincampuswasnamedafterhim.TheBurnabycampushastwomainsportscomplexescalledtheLorne-DaviesComplexandtheChancellor'sStadium.TheswimmingpoolwithinternationalstandardsislocatedintheLorne-DaviesComplex.Sinceitsestablishment,themaincampushaswonalargenumberofarchitecturaldesignawards,includingthe2009LieutenantGovernor’sArchitecturalDesignGoldAwardandtheRoyalArchitecturalSocietyofCanada’s20thCenturyDesignAward.
ExceptforSimonFraserUniversityitselfanditsrelatedindustrialresearchparkDiscoveryPark,BurnabyMountainhasdevelopedveryfewprojects.Until2003,theuniversitybegantodevelopa200-acrecampusnearthehill.ThelandisusedtobuildamodelandsustainablecommunityandnamedUniverCity.Thereareasmanyas4,500residentialunitsinthiscommunity,dividedintoseveralsmallcommunities,aswellasnewtowncenters,schools,parksandotherfacilities.AsofJanuary2006,585residencesandthe"Cornerstonebuilding"(Cornerstonebuilding)withrestaurantsandshopshavebeencompleted.Another400housesareunderconstruction,andsomeofthecharacteristicsofthiscommunityarebeginningtoattractforeigners'attention.Thesefeaturesinclude:Canada'sfirstcommunitypublictransportpassprogram,legalsecondarysuitestoprovidehousingforallpeople,modelrainwatertreatmentsystems,anditspolicyprohibitsmultinationalcompaniesfromopeningbranches.
SurreyCampus
TheSurreycampusislocatedindowntownSurrey.Thecampusisalsopartofthecitycenter,whichisacomplexofbuildingsadjacenttoSurreyCentralSkytrainStation.Thecampuswasestablishedin2002toabsorbthestudentsandresearchprojectsoftheBritishColumbiaUniversityofTechnology.ThecampushasbeenexpandedintoacomprehensiveoperationscenterinSurreyandrunsotherSFUstudentprojects.TheentirebuildingwasdesignedbyChinesearchitectBingThom(BingThom)andopenedtothepublicin2006.Atthesametime,theFraserLibrary,whichisabranchoftheSimonFraserUniversityLibrary,islocatedhere.ThemaincollectionisrelatedtotheSchoolofInteractiveArtandTechnology.
VancouverCampus
TheVancouvercampuswasestablishedinthe1980sandbuiltBritishColumbia’sfirstuniversityclassroominthecitycenter.ThefourbuildingsontheVancouvercampusspanthecoreareaofdowntownVancouver.Theyare:SimonFraserUniversityOceanCenter,MorrisJWoskExchangeCenter,SiegelGraduateSchoolofEconomicsandSimonFraserUniversityContemporaryArtCenter.Today,theentirecampusservesmorethan70,000peopleeveryyear,andnearly10,000undergraduatesandgraduatestudentsstudyhere.TheBelzbergLibraryislocatedhere.
PublicTransportation
ThemaincampusofSFUislocatedatthetopofBurnabyMountain,whichcausesinconveniencetostudentsintermsoftransportation.However,theextensionprojectoftheVancouveroverheadtrainandthepassageofthestudentbusconcessioncardU-Passhaveimprovedthetrafficproblem.Therearecurrentlyfourmainbuslines(No.95,No.143,No.144andNo.145)connectingthemaincampusandtheoverheadtrainsystem.Amongthem,Line145connectstheProductionWay-UniversitySkyStationandtheSFUmaincampus,andisoneofthemostimportantmeansoftransportationforSFUstudents;Line144connectstoSperling-BurnabyLakeTrainStationandMetrotownTrainStation;Line95goesdirectlytoBurrardTrainStation,locatedatDowntownVancouver,onlyonestopawayfromSFUVancouvercampus;Line143connectstoBurquitlamStation.
TheVancouvercitycentercampusislocatedoppositetheWaterfrontMRTstation,whiletheSurreycampusislocatedinCentralCity,adjacenttotheSurreyCentralMRTstation.MostSimonFraserUniversitystudentsliveinthevicinityofthecampusandtakepublictransportationtoschooleveryday.Universitydormitoriescanaccommodateabout2,200students,ofwhichthreedormitorybuildingswerecompletedin2005.

Thestudentnewspaperswerepublishedandcirculatedwidelyintheschoolatthebeginningoftheschool.Theschoolhasitsownradiochannel.SimonFraserUniversitystudentssponsormorethan100clubs,includingsomefamousschoolactivitiessuchasTerryFoxRun,GungHaggisFatChoy,ClubsWeek,etc.
In1966,abranchofPhrateres,anon-independentandnon-profitsocialgroup,wasestablishedintheschool.From1924to1967,23PhrateresbrancheswereestablishedinNorthAmerica,includingtheUniversityofBritishColumbiabranch.
Sports
AllsportsteamsatSimonFraserUniversityarecollectivelyreferredtoastheSimonFraserteam,andtheScottishTerriermascotiscalled-McFoggtheDog.Insportsandothercompetitions,SimonFraserUniversityoftencompeteswiththeUniversityofBritishColumbia.
SimonFraserUniversityhaswonfiveU.S.AthleticsCommitteeDirectors’Cups.OnJuly10,2009,NCAAofficiallyacceptedSFUasaDavidsonIImember,whichmeansthatSFUcanparticipateintheNorthwesternGamesintheUnitedStates.SFUisthefirstmemberofalllevelsofNCAAinCanada.In2012,thesportsteambecamethefirstNCAAinternationalgroupmember.
